  1. Not if three others are giving me $9 million! I'd say "Look, I can name a room or maybe a wing after you, but if you want the building, you gotta cough up at least... $9.5 million. If it were up to me, I would name the building after a simple, logical approach: Name it for the people it serves. If it's for Montreal, then the Montreal Planetarium. If it was the only planetarium in Quebec, then the Quebec Planetarium. And so on (e.g. Verdun Auditorium). I also think that the term 'National' should be kept for locations in the National Capital Region (Ottawa-Gatineau). Except the Monument National. That place is awesome! Bottom line: Hooray for anonymous donors!!!
  2. City of Montreal: $9,000,000 Government of Quebec: $9,000,000 Government of Canada: $9,000,000 Rio Tinto Alcan: $4,000,000 And the name of the new planetarium? You guessed it... The Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium!!! My question is why?
  3. The past is not always an indicator of the future. All this city needs is some new blood (and balls) at City Hall.
  4. I had never seen the ETS main building without its grey coat on before. Any other pictures available?
  5. Does anybody know what the small building with the towers and the red fire escape in the foreground was? Why was it destroyed?
  6. Does anybody have a picture of the Saint-Ambroise side? I'm guessing more brick and less glass.
  7. Would the owner of the Caron Building ever consider sprucing up the President Kennedy side of the building? Is there any advantage in doing it?
  8. The Sun Life building, one of Montreal's greatest, was expanded (I believe) more than once. I think someone posted pictures recently in another thread.

    Gare Viger

I think there is sufficient space between the old building and the new ones such that the former will not be suffocated by the latter. This project along with the other one shown in the model (I can't remember the name) will add a good chunk of citizens in the area. I like it a lot!
  10. Had this stadium been built as shown and had the Expos stayed in Montreal, I think this would have helped people forget the big Ohhh.

    Gare Viger

People here in Montreal seem to like status-quo. It's an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it, but don't make it better either" attitude. What's the deal with wanting to keep low income people downtown? I don't see a problem with building low income housing on the periphery of downtown, for example east of Berri, Saint Charles/Saint-Henri, NDG, etc.
  12. This tower with glass curtain walls (similar to what was done with BDC and Quebecor phase 1) could be really nice and would integrate nicely into a project with several other glass towers (similar to Vancouver or Toronto-style condo buildings). Anything but prefab panels, please!
  13. Why is there so much talk about having access to the Saint-Lawrence. Unless you have a boat, there's not much to do there. The water is not clean at all. In fact, it's pretty much just large commercial vessels that are present in the area. It's kind of like saying, "We want to have better access to highways where tractor-trailers drive by" or "Give us better access to railroads where freight trains roll by". It's potentially dangerous and can have a negative impact on port operations. The Saint-Lawrence Seaway is one of the most important transportation lanes on the planet!
  14. With regards to bus station location, I think Manhattan's Port Authority Bus Terminal is ideal. Buses come through the Lincoln Tunnel from New Jersey straight into the bus terminal (it all happens underground) and leave the same way. There are, to my recollection, no long distance buses driving around Manhattan. I think that something similar could benefit Montreal. Having the buses crossing the JC bridge and driving around Berri is unnecessary. I would have all buses stop at Longueuil and then people can take the metro to Berri (it could be included in the price). Of course, this idea is not perfect and it could be adapted.
  15. There are some people out there who are thinking "I wish I could live at the mall" and this would be their dream come true.
  16. While I was walking by today, I noticed a flatbed truck delivering some prefab wall panels to this land, the type that might be used for something like, oh, say, a model condo... Just saying what I saw. Can anyone confirm?
  17. Little known fact: Prior to the expansion of the City and District Bank of Montreal (now a Banque Laurentienne branch) across the street, the statue was located on the corner diagonally across from where it is now. Also note that the bank in question, along with its addition, are one of the nicest buildings in Verdun.
  18. There is already a great De Gaulle statue in Quebec City near the National Battlefields Park, next to the Loews Le Concorde hotel. This bust is actually kind of sad compared to the great statue. http://frontenac.ameriques.free.fr/images/statue_deGaulle_quebec.jpg
  19. They don't even have that in every metro station yet! I think that would happen way before any bus timers. I mean, there used to be clocks in every metro station. The clocks are gone, but the things that housed them are still there! How lazy can they be to not remove or replace them. Prior to McGill station getting the huge screens, there were small digital clocks showing the time and the time of the next two metros. They seemed to work well. Why not put some in every station, or at least the most used stations!
  20. I believe that is Saint-Urbain street. I think that in the picture the mini mountain is actually a glass skylight, with the lobby or atrium below.
  21. Something doesn't add up. The Bay must have paid a fair amount to have a very accurate likeness of the original Morgan's department store printed on fabric to hide the scaffolding. Why cover it up with, in my opinion, pretty lame advertising? That's like getting a new paint job on a car and then covering it up with giant decals... lame!
  22. What they don't mention is that they actually invited over 200,000 academics from all over the world and only 5,000 responded, AND that's 5,000 over a three year period! The response rate is less than 1% per year. A reminder that all rankings, as flattering as they may be, are to be taken lightly.

    Canadiens de Montréal

Didn't Latendresse hurt his hip or something a few games ago? It looks like that injury might be dogging him. Imagine if that Komisarek goal would have been in game 82 (with a spot in the playoffs depending on it)... he would be elevated to the status of hero!
  24. Something needs to be done about the war memorial in Place du Canada. I often see people sitting on it or eating or worse, butting their cigarettes on it, and I have to remind them just what those slabs of concrete represent. As someone who has family that served (and some died) in WWI, WWII, and Korea, I am extremely insulted by these people. How would they feel if I left scraps of food and garbage on a memorial dedicated to their grandparents? Anyways, a barrier with minimal signage and a seating area could help remedy the situation.
  25. Is there a way to have the signs straight instead of tilted 45 degrees? It gets uncomfortable to read quite quickly, and as you can see, some signs are quite wordy...
