Air Algérie has been ordered to pay back €11.22 million to Canadian SMI International Air Algérie, the Algerian national airline has been ordered to pay back 1.5 billion Algerian Dinars (11.22 million Euros) 1 to the Canadian group SMI International, the International Court of Arbitration of Canada (ICC) has decided. The airline now has until Thursday to comply with the judgement and pay the requested amount, if not the airline may face its Airbus A330 aircraft being seized in Canada. It’s not the first time that an Air Algérie aircraft was seized: in 2014 a Belgian court seized an aircraft at Brussels Airport, sparking a diplomatic row between Algeria, Belgium and The Netherlands. Finally Air Algérie paid a sum of € 2 million dollars to a Dutch company. The dispute concerns the construction of the new Air Algérie headquarters located in Dar El Beida, just next to the old headquarters of Mobilis and worth an investment of €100 million. Back in 2013 Air Algérie canceled the contract with SMI for “non-performance, not completing the project on time and failure of the contractor”. In fact the Lebanese design office Khatib and Alami did not deliver the final version of the correct construction plans until March 2012, only one year from the expiration of the deadlines. While SMI requested an extension of the deadline and asked Air Algérie to pay €17.8 million for unpaid work and materials, the latter unilaterally decided to end the contract. But Air Canada and the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) are determined to flip that view on its head by turning Toronto’s Pearson International Airport into a mega-hub on the scale of Amsterdam’s Schiphol, Singapore’s Changi or Dubai International Airport. Pearson is already well on its way to meeting that goal since it attracts more international passengers than any other airport in North America except John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City. Toronto’s primary airport is now the fourth-largest entry point by air into the United States, surpassing many large U.S. airports, according to National Bank analyst Cameron Doerksen. But to become a true mega-hub comparable in scope and status to the Dubais of the world, a lot needs to change. Pesky taxes and fees make Pearson “the most expensive airport in the world at which to land a plane,” according to a 2012 Senate report. There’s also the problem of congestion — in the airport, on its runways and on surrounding roadways — that will only get worse unless significant investments are made in infrastructure. If these issues aren’t addressed, Pearson could miss out on an opportunity to become part of the exclusive mega-hub club — there are currently only 11 worldwide — and all the attendant economic benefits, including the creation of more than 200,000 jobs in the area. The GTAA, which manages and operates Pearson, defines a mega-hub as an airport that processes 50 million passengers a year, including at least 20 million international passengers, and connects to 80 per cent of the global economy. Pearson is pretty close to those numbers. In 2015, it moved 41 million passengers, including 25 million international travellers, and connected to 67 per cent of the global economy. It was recently ranked 19th in the world for its connectivity — sandwiched between Philadelphia, which is not a mega-hub, and Frankfurt, which is — by air-travel intelligence company OAG. There’s plenty of potential for further growth at Pearson. Howard Eng, GTAA’s chief executive, said the airport has the largest catchment area — defined as the population within a 90-minute flight — of any airport in North America, bigger than even JFK or Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Pearson also has an enthusiastic partner in Air Canada, which accounts for 57.6 per cent of the airport’s seat capacity, according to the Centre for Aviation, and has been pursuing an aggressive international growth strategy using its new fleet of Boeing 787s. To support Air Canada, the GTAA has agreed to fix the airline’s fees for 10 years in exchange for agreed-upon passenger growth targets, and will offer rebates if it exceeds those targets. “They want to be a mega-carrier and, as a result of that, they need a mega-hub to work out of,” Eng said in an interview. “We’re both aligned on the concept.” One of Air Canada’s main growth pillars is expanding so-called sixth-freedom traffic, or traffic from a second country to a third country via an airline’s home market. In Air Canada’s case, that primarily means Americans travelling from their home cities via Toronto to destinations in Europe or Asia. The airline’s stated goal is to attract a 1.5-per-cent “fair share” of the U.S. sixth-freedom market, which would add $600 to $700 million in incremental revenue, but chief executive Calin Rovinescu said it can probably do “much better than that.” “We’ve been basically increasing our sixth-freedom flying by mid-to high-teen (percentages) in each of the last two years,” Rovinescu said in a recent interview. He hopes to turn Pearson into a “world-class hub” comparable to Amsterdam, Singapore or Dubai. Related How you can nab premium flights without paying through the nose Air Canada ready to compete with new, low-cost airlines, CEO says “Those countries don’t have a large population base, but they have built very powerful hubs,” Rovinescu said. “Toronto is still relatively speaking underserved in terms of the catchment area and the market potential for it.” But in order to become a truly successful mega-hub, Pearson will need to overcome two major limitations. The first is those exceedingly high costs that drive so many Canadians to U.S. border airports — the equivalent of 64 Boeing 737s every day, according to a 2012 report by the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications. The World Economic Forum’s 2015 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report ranked Canada 124th out of 141 countries on price competitiveness. This is a function of Canada’s “antiquated” national airport model, according to a recent review of the Canada Transportation Act (CTA) by former federal cabinet minister David Emerson. In 1994, the federal government transferred the management, operation and development of 26 major airports to non-profit airport authorities while retaining ownership of their land and fixed assets and charging them rent. The GTAA pays Ottawa $130 million a year in ground rents for Pearson. Add in government security charges and, in Ontario, a jet-fuel tax that will hit 6.7 cents a litre by April 2017, and the airport is at a real cost disadvantage compared to its competitors. It’s because of the ridiculous rents that they have to pay.” Emerson’s review of the CTA concluded that the solution is to move towards a fully privatized, for-profit structure with equity-based financing from large institutional investors. “Will privatization make a difference to Canada? I think it probably would,” Bentley said. “Toronto would become more efficient in terms of its costs to airlines and, therefore, could compete better with the likes of Chicago and other airports in the region.” Eng at the GTAA will not say whether he’d prefer a share-capital structure to the current non-profit system. But he’s quick to emphasize that Pearson is already run like a private entity, paying down $500 million in debt over the past four years and investing $700 million of capital in airport infrastructure and amenities since 2010. Pearson has also frozen or reduced the airlines’ average aeronautical fees per passenger for eight consecutive years, for a total reduction of 30 per cent since 2007. “We run it like a private corporation,” Eng said. “My focus is on how we can generate the revenue in order to pay down the debt, reinvest in the airport and create the facility that’s needed to process the passengers.” The second limitation at Pearson is congestion. The airport’s passenger traffic has grown so rapidly that the airport’s infrastructure — its security and customs checkpoints, runways, de-icing stations and even the surrounding roads — are having trouble keeping up. “A lot of people say there’s no competition for airports because every city has one large airport,” Eng said. “But once you’re into the global hub status, in Pearson’s case almost 35 to 40 per cent of our traffic is what we call transfer traffic, they have a choice.” Passengers who are connecting to another destination are generally looking for the shortest connection time, he said. To that end, Pearson is working to improve the flow of passengers and luggage by offering things such as self-serve baggage drops, automated border kiosks and automatic luggage transfers for passengers travelling from certain global cities to other Canadian destinations. However, Eng stressed that Pearson also needs the government’s help to speed up security and border processing times, which are notoriously slow. Most passengers at Pearson wait 20 minutes for pre-board screening compared to five minutes for 95 per cent of passengers at London’s Heathrow Airport and Hong Kong International Airport. “We’re not asking for a special favour, (just) that they provide their processes in a manner that is equivalent to what the best airports are doing around the world,” he said. Another key part of Pearson’s mega-hub strategy is to improve the notoriously bad road traffic around the airport region. According to the GTAA, only 10 per cent of Pearson’s passengers arrive on public transit compared to 39 per cent in Amsterdam and 63 per cent in Hong Kong. A recent study by the Neptis Foundation found that there are a million car trips per day in and out of the Pearson region by employees and travellers. The recent launch of the Union Pearson Express rail line to downtown Toronto has helped, but “not enough,” Eng said. “We probably need various domestic lines, special lines, high-speed rail lines,” he said, adding that the GTAA is prepared to help fund the development of a ground-transportation hub at the airport, but it will need government support as well. fp1201_mega_hub_transitIf Pearson isn’t able to lower its costs and improve its infrastructure, it could miss out on a huge potential economic opportunity. According to Frontier Economics, becoming a mega-hub will increase the airport economic zone’s GDP by 75 per cent to $62.1 billion and create more than 200,000 jobs by 2030. “Airports are changing from city airports to airport cities,” said John Kasarda, director of the Center for Air Commerce at the University of North Carolina. Kasarda devised the concept of the “aerotropolis,” a notion that airports are far more than just transportation infrastructure, but rather anchors of regional business development. “The 21st-century airport is quite different than the 20th-century airport,” he said. “They’re multi-modal, multi-functional enterprises that attract a substantial amount of commercial development.” This can create a virtuous circle of expansion, Kasarda added. “Not only does the better airline connectivity, the route structure, serve as this magnet for business, but as business grows it generates greater volumes of passengers and cargo, which supports more airline connectivity,” he said. “It’s mutually reinforcing.” Smoother connections can also help keep airlines’ costs down by generating more non-aeronautical revenue from retail, restaurants and other services. “It’s a necessity, not an option,” Kasarda said.

Le gouvernement Charest, Équiterre et Montréal international ont annoncé lundi la création du tout nouveau secrétariat de la Campagne internationale action climat (CIAC), dont le quartier général s'établira dans la métropole. Ce bureau, où n'oeuvreront que quatre employés, aura pour mandat de coordonner certaines des plus importantes activités militantes à venir aux quatre coins de la planète dans la prochaine année : Bangkok et Barcelone (rencontres préliminaire sur le climat), Pittsburgh (G-20), New York (assemblée des Nations Unies), etc. L'objectif est d'accroître la pression sur une douzaine de pays connus pour leur timide engagement en faveur d'une réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre, afin qu'ils s'engagent à ratifier un accord international ambitieux, lors de la Conférence de Copenhague qui se tiendra du 7 au 18 décembre prochain. Nommément, le Brésil, l'Inde, l'Arabie saoudite, la Pologne, le Japon et le Canada se retrouvent dans cette liste. «L'objectif est que ces pays s'entendent sur un accord international, à Copenhague, a précisé la ministre québécoise de l'Environnement, Line Beauchamp. Pour cela, nous devons rejoindre certains États clés, certains États stratégiques, afin de les convaincre de l'importance d'une telle entente.» Idée d'Équiterre L'idée de créer la Campagne internationale action climat a été lancée par Équiterre en 2006. Le Québec a ensuite accepté de verser 300 000 $, l'année suivante, afin qu'elle se concrétise. Après quoi la principauté de Monaco, le gouvernement britannique et certaines grandes fondations internationales ont accepté de se joindre à l'effort, qui se chiffre aujourd'hui à environ 10 millions de dollars. Le gouvernement fédéral, pour sa part, n'a rien versé, ce qui lui a d'ailleurs attiré certaines critiques, lors du point de presse des différents partenaires. La création du secrétariat du CIAC s'inscrit dans une vaste campagne appelée tcktcktck (à prononcer tic, tic, tic, comme une horloge), qui doit prendre de l'ampleur au fur et à mesure que la conférence de l'ONU sur les changements climatiques approchera. Une vingtaine de groupes font partie de cette coalition, dont Oxfam, Greenpeace, le Conseil mondial des églises, Global Humanitarian Forum, Union of Concerned Scientists et le Pew Environment Group. Il existait déjà des regroupements, comme Kyoto plus, Power Up et le Réseau action climat, mais les groupes environnementaux estimaient nécessaire de mettre sur pied une coalition dont l'unique mandat est d'encadrer le travail sur le terrain : manifestations, mobilisation, etc. «Le constat est qu'il manquait quelque chose, à l'international, pour s'assurer qu'il y ait un accord en décembre, qu'il soit ratifié et mise en oeuvre rapidement», a précisé Steven Guilbeault, d'Équiterre. UN Blowback: More Than 650 International Scientists Dissent Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims POZNAN, Poland - The UN global warming conference currently underway in Poland is about to face a serious challenge from over 650 dissenting scientists from around the globe who are criticizing the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore. Set for release this week, a newly updated U.S. Senate Minority Report features the dissenting voices of over 650 international scientists, many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN. The report has added about 250 scientists (and growing) in 2008 to the over 400 scientists who spoke out in 2007. The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers. The U.S. Senate report is the latest evidence of the growing groundswell of scientific opposition rising to challenge the UN and Gore. Scientific meetings are now being dominated by a growing number of skeptical scientists. The prestigious International Geological Congress, dubbed the geologists' equivalent of the Olympic Games, was held in Norway in August 2008 and prominently featured the voices and views of scientists skeptical of man-made global warming fears. Montreal: a thrilling collision of cultures Part French, part English and a lot more besides, Montreal is stylish, intriguing, and full of joie de vivre, says Kathy Arnold. On a sunny Saturday morning, we stroll through the Quartier Latin. Apart from a few dogwalkers and the occasional cyclist, the streets are quiet. We take a table at an outdoor café, order café au lait and read through La Presse, the local newspaper. It is all oh-so French, but when an American sits down nearby, the waitress slips effortlessly into English. We are in Montreal, the third-largest French-speaking metropolis in the world (after Paris and Kinshasa) – and one of the most intriguing cities I know. Montreal is proud of its Gallic roots. From its founding in 1642 until 1763, when the British took over, this island in the St Lawrence River was an important outpost of France. Down by the harbour, 19th-century banks and warehouses testify to the wealth generated by the port. It still ranks as one of the largest in North America, despite being 1,000 miles from the Atlantic. Traditionally, the Anglophones lived on the west side, the Francophones to the east. The dividing line was - and still is - the boulevard Saint-Laurent, referred to as “The Main” in English or “La Main” in French. The look of the city reflects this mixture of cultures, as if, in an architectural game of tit-for-tat, classic French designs are matched by traditional British. In front of the Hôtel de Ville, we crane our necks to look up at columns and porticoes as grandiose as any on a 19th-century town hall in France. By contrast, at Christ Church Cathedral, Anglican Gothic rules, from arches to spire. Then there are the street names: Saint-Jacques and Victor-Hugo share the map with Sherbrooke and Queen-Mary. And where else boasts a rue Napoléon and a rue Wellington? Canada’s second city may rest on European foundations, but its mirror-windowed skyscrapers are pure North America. So is the grid system of streets that spreads from the St Lawrence up to Mont-Royal, the hill for which the city is named. But unlike many US cities, Montreal is very walkable. We saunter along cobbled streets and lanes in the oldest part of the city, the Vieux-Port, where harbourside seediness has given way to galleries, trendy hotels and restaurants. Up the hill, in the Plateau area, we photograph the escaliers - the outdoor staircases that are a feature of the century-old duplex townhouses. Some insist that the curved steps reduced building costs; others say they created space for a front garden. Local lore suggests otherwise. “We are very Catholic,” a friend explains. “To ensure propriety, the church insisted on exterior entrances so everyone on the street could always see who was going in and out of each apartment.” Many Montrealers still live downtown, so the urban bustle continues after work and at weekends. Thanks to a passion for the arts, there is always plenty going on. Over the years, we have been to the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the Grands Ballets Canadiens, enjoyed jazz and comedy at small clubs. And we have always eaten well. Like their cousins in the Old World, Montrealers love good food. As well as four busy, European-style markets, piled high with local produce, there is a huge range of well-priced restaurants. Some offer hearty Québec favourites such as smoked meat, tourtière (meat pie) and, thanks to the Jewish community, arguably the best bagels in North America. My favourite restaurants are those offering a modern take on traditional recipes; the most famous is Toqué!, whose chef, Normand Laprise, was in the vanguard of the foodie revolution. Still others reflect the influx of immigrants from Italy and Greece, Spain and China. These newcomers have spiced up the pot-au-feu that is Montreal: Vietnamese-run flower stalls look like mini-garden centres and red-shirted Benfica supporters celebrate the Portuguese club’s victory. Although locals still talk about the “French” and the “English”, meaning Francophone and Anglophone, Montreal today embraces so much more than just these two cultures. It all adds up to a city that is vibrant, confident and forward-looking, with a joie de vivre that is impossible to resist. As the franglais slogan for a local radio station puts it: “Plus de hits! Plus de fun!” Essentials Montreal is five hours behind UK time; the international dialling code for Canada is 001; the current exchange rate is C$1.88 to the pound. Where to stay Luxury The city is dotted with designer-cool hotels, such as the 30-room Hotel Gault at 449 rue Sainte-Hélène (514 904 1616, http://www.hotelgault.com; from £90), on the edge of Vieux-Montreal. Behind its elegant 1871 façade are bare brick and modern art. Traditionalists should opt for the Auberge Bonaparte at 447 rue Saint-François-Xavier (514 844 1448, http://www.bonaparte.com; £80), with its romantic ambience, excellent restaurant and 30 comfortable rooms. In fine weather, take in the views over Vieux-Montreal from the sixth-floor roof terrace. Mid-range The 60-room Hôtel XIXe Siècle at 262 rue St-Jacques Ouest (877 553 0019, http://www.hotelxixsiecle.com; from £70) scores for price and location – on the edge of Vieux-Montreal and an easy walk from downtown. The lobby and bar still have the high ceilings from the building’s origins as a 19th-century bank. Budget When the Auberge Les Passants du Sans Soucy at 171 rue St-Paul Ouest (514 842 2634, http://www.lesanssoucy.com) opened as an art gallery-cum-b&b some 15 years ago, Vieux-Montreal had yet to be revived. Today, guests staying in this 1723 stone house are steps away from galleries, shops and restaurants. Nine rooms only, so book early; Daniel Soucy’s breakfasts are lavish. What to see Museums For a quick history lesson, visit Pointe-à-Callière, built right on top of the city’s first Catholic cemetery (1643-1654). Look down through glass to the graves of Iroquois Indians buried near people named Tessier, Thibault and Hébert, family names that are still in the local phone book. On the top floor, L’Arrivage restaurant has great views over the port (514 872 9150, http://www.pacmusee.qc.ca). As well as the obvious European Old Masters, the Musée des Beaux-Arts (514 285 2000, http://www.mbam.qc.ca) has fine Canadian works. Paintings by the renowned Group of Seven capture the ruggedness of the country in the early 20th century; more contemporary are Quebecois talents such as Jean-Paul Riopelle and Serge Lemoyne . The Olympic Park From the 1976 Olympic Stadium, the Montreal Tower rises 537 feet (164m) - at an incline of 45 degrees. Take the funicular up to the Observatory for spectacular views across the city. Another legacy of the Games is the pool. For £2, you can swim where David Wilkie of Scotland took gold in the 200m breaststroke, breaking the world record in the process (514 252 4737, http://www.rio.gouv.qc.ca). Then there is the velodrome, recycled as the Biodôme. Under a vast roof, this space is divided into four eco-systems, which are always in season. Sloths hide in the Tropical Rainforest, cod and salmon swim in the St Lawrence Marine Eco-system, beavers build dams in the Laurentian Forest, but the biggest crowd-pleasers are the penguins, which torpedo into the icy waters of the Antarctic (514 868 3000, http://www.biodome.qc.ca). Montreal Botanical Garden An easy walk from the Olympic Park is the city’s answer to Kew Gardens (514 872 1400, www2.ville.montreal.qc.ca/jardin). Within its 180 acres are 10 giant greenhouses and 30 themed gardens. Learn all about toxic and medicinal plants; compare Chinese and Japanese horticultural styles. Montreal Insectarium Across from the Botanical Garden is the Insectarium (514 872 1400, www2.ville.montreal.qc.ca/insectarium), a must for children. This is a world of creepy-crawlies, with dung beetles, stick insects, cochineals, bees and more. There is even a set of scales that registers your weight, not in pounds or kilos but in ants. A 10-year-old weighs in at about 1.5 million. What to buy Shopping With sterling riding high, shopping is a pleasure. All the international brand names are here, but most fun are the boutiques featuring the work of stylish local designers. Downtown, head for rue de la Montagne, between Boulevard de Maisonneuve and rue Sherbrooke; up on the Plateau, check out rue Saint-Denis, chock-a-block with shops, and the funky boulevard Saint-Laurent. The three big department stores are Holt Renfrew, La Baie (Hudson’s Bay Company) and La Maison Ogilvy, where noon is still marked by a kilted piper playing the bagpipes. Markets Join locals shopping for produits du terroir at the art deco Marché Atwater, with its cheeses and maple syrup, and, next to Little Italy, the Marché Jean-Talon, ringed with busy bistro tables. The Marché Bonsecours in Vieux-Montreal no longer sells fruit and veg: the handsome 1847 building is now devoted to arts and crafts. Where to eat Toqué! Back in the early 1990s, Normand Laprise startled locals with his flavour combinations and the dramatic look of his dishes. As inventive as ever, his seven-course, £45 “mystery menu” could include scallops marinated in strawberry and bell pepper jus and suckling pig with a curry glaze (900 Place Jean-Paul-Riopelle; 514 499 2084, http://www.restaurant-toque.com). La Porte At this family-run operation, Pascale Rouyé looks after front of house while her husband, Thierry, and their son cook. They do what the French do best (local ingredients, classic techniques), and the five-course, £22 menu would be hard to beat in their native Brittany (3627 Boulevard Saint-Laurent; 514 282 4996) . Olive + Gourmando Wood floors and chairs and young, cheerful staff make this a pleasant place to start the day with steaming café au lait and a blueberry brioche (351 rue Saint-Paul Ouest; 514 350 1083, http://www.oliveetgourmando.com). Garde-Manger The disco beat gets louder as the evening progresses in this brick-walled restaurant. Get stuck in to ribs and platters piled with crabs, mussels and shrimp from Québec’s Iles de la Madeleine. Finish with maple-pecan pie (408 rue Saint-François-Xavier; 514 678 5044). Aszú In this basement oenothèque, David Couture’s modern cuisine is matched with 50 wines by the glass (212 rue Notre-Dame Ouest; 514 845 5436). Night owls During Prohibition, Americans escaped to Montreal for whisky and jazz. There is still no shortage of clubs and bars. Montréal International - 670 millions d'investissements étrangers et trois nouvelles organisations internationales pour le Grand Montréal Par ses activités de promotion et de prospection à l’étranger, Montréal International (MI) a contribué en 2007 à l’attraction de 670 millions de dollars d’investissements étrangers et de trois nouvelles organisations internationales dans le Grand Montréal. Ces résultats ont été dévoilés lors de la 12e assemblée annuelle de MI, qui réunissait plus de 150 membres et partenaires. Soulignant l’excellente performance de l’organisation, qui a atteint, voire dépassé ses objectifs, le président-directeur général de Montréal International, M. André Gamache, a déclaré : « Malgré la constante évolution de l’environnement économique mondial, Montréal International a continué de jouer avec succès, en 2007, son rôle de « force d’attraction » auprès des sociétés étrangères et des organisations internationales, générant des retombées substantielles pour l’économie et le rayonnement international du Grand Montréal ». Attraction des investissements étrangers et des organisations internationales Les investissements étrangers auxquels MI a été associé en 2007 donneront lieu à la création et au maintien de près de 3 500 emplois dans la région métropolitaine. Ces investissements, qui se retrouvent principalement dans les secteurs de haute technologie, ont été réalisés à 60 % par des sociétés nord-américaines et à 36 % par des entreprises européennes. Fait important à noter, près de la moitié des investissements étrangers attirés par MI en 2007 correspondent à de nouvelles implantations alors que les expansions de filiales et les acquisitions représentent quant à elles 45 % et 7 % respectivement. Au niveau des organisations internationales, le bilan est également très positif puisque quatre projets ont été complétés avec succès, dont l’implantation à Montréal de trois nouvelles organisations internationales, soit la Finance Alliance for Sustainable Trade (FAST), la Fédération internationale des Architectes d’Intérieur (IFI) et la Campagne internationale sur le climat. Les réalisations 2007 de MI incluent également le maintien de la présence de l’Agence mondiale antidopage (AMA) dans la métropole pour dix années supplémentaires à partir de 2011, soit jusqu’en 2021. Mentionnons qu’en plus de ces projets inscrits aux résultats de MI, la région a accueilli deux autres organisations internationales en 2007, soit le Projet public de génomique des populations (P3G) et le Forum International des Universités Publiques (FIUP). Accueil des travailleurs stratégiques étrangers Pendant cette même période, l’équipe de la mobilité internationale, qui facilite l’établissement de la main-d’œuvre étrangère stratégique dans la région, a traité 724 dossiers de travailleurs étrangers et leur famille, ce qui représente plus de 1 100 personnes aidées. La venue de cette main-d’œuvre qualifiée contribue à enrichir la région d’une solide expertise, élément clé de la compétitivité dans l’économie du savoir. Soutien au développement des grappes de compétition Par ailleurs, Montréal International a continué de soutenir activement le développement de Montréal InVivo, la grappe des sciences de la vie et des technologies de la santé, et de TechnoMontréal, la grappe des technologies de l’information et des communications, qui forment désormais des entités autonomes, au même titre qu’Aéro Montréal. Eu égard à l’importance stratégique de ces pôles de l’économie du Grand Montréal, MI a maximisé les synergies avec ces grappes, en leur offrant notamment des services professionnels adaptés à leurs besoins. Contributions des secteurs privé et public Toujours en 2007, MI a recueilli plus d’un million de dollars de financement privé en provenance de quelque 110 membres, ainsi que 8,7 millions de dollars du gouvernement du Canada, du gouvernement du Québec, de la Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal et de la Ville de Montréal. « Ce soutien financier démontre une fois de plus la confiance de nos partenaires, des institutions et du milieu des affaires métropolitain envers Montréal International et sa mission d’intérêt public. Nous leur en sommes extrêmement reconnaissants », a ajouté M. Gamache. Plan triennal 2008-2010 Riche en réflexions stratégiques, l’année 2007 a également conduit à l’adoption, par le conseil de MI, d’un plan stratégique triennal pour les années 2008 à 2010. Parmi les éléments clés de ce plan, figure l’innovation, véritable fer de lance de la compétitivité de l’économie du savoir. « En raison de la constante évolution de l’environnement économique mondial, qui exerce une influence déterminante sur le travail de MI, il était impératif d’actualiser les orientations stratégiques et les activités de l’organisme », a déclaré le président du conseil d’administration de MI et président du conseil de la Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, M. Pierre Brunet. « Montréal International mettra en œuvre des projets porteurs qui permettront de mobiliser les acteurs de la région et d’y propulser l’innovation », a-t-il ajouté. Parmi les priorités de l’organisation en 2008, MI entend maintenir, et intensifier au besoin, ses interventions dans le cadre des grands dossiers touchant l’attractivité de la région métropolitaine. L’organisme a d’ailleurs été actif à ce chapitre l’an dernier, puisqu’il a déposé trois mémoires touchant respectivement les aides fiscales en faveur de la nouvelle économie, les mesures incitatives en soutien à la recherche scientifique et au développement expérimental, et enfin l’attraction et la rétention des travailleurs stratégiques étrangers dans le Grand Montréal
