Toronto's Condo Kings: Is their boom sustainable?
mcgill a répondu à un sujet de ErickMontreal dans L'actualité
Let's go guys (and girls), get BUSY! Have a family and raise them (in the city or the burbs, doesn't matter) and teach them to love beautiful architecture, sound urban planning, a vibrant cultural and artistic scene, and a heritage unlike any other in the world! -
I agree completely! Had the owners really put some effort into this place, it could have been revived to its former glory and booming business. The downfall was simply accepted. Way to keep the family legacy going... Has anyone here ever been inside (and possibly photographed) the upper floors of Ben's? I imagine it's some office/storage space. Please post pictures or share anecdotes. Thanks.

Transports en commun - Discussion générale
mcgill a répondu à un sujet de mtlurb dans Transports en commun
I think tolls would be fine; I don't see how much would change for people (one less cup of coffee per day and there's the toll). New York City and London (and many other agglomerations) have tolls and people still live and work there. However, I agree that it should not be a bridge toll, rather a distance toll (make those who travel furthest pay the most). It's all about making people think and make decisions. When someone is looking for a place to live, if they don't want to pay for parking or gas, then proximity to public transit should be a priority. Montreal has a great public transit system (buses, metros, and trains) that is affordable and convenient. People have to understand that by living in the suburbs, that was a choice THEY made, and they have to live with that choice. I grew up in the suburbs and I see and understand the desire to do so. Perhaps this is all part of a bigger picture: As Quebekers and Canadians, we are used to paying next to nothing for energy (electricity, gas, water) and it's all catching up to us now. Expect to see more "European" level pricing for the aforementioned in the next 10-20 years. And the government's message: Take it or leave it!- 1 654 réponses

This is certainly long overdue good news! I think that by having more NASCAR events in Montreal, more Americans would see the city and want to visit Montreal. It seems to me (correct me if I'm mistaken) that American tourists are not coming in the numbers they used to.

autoroute 10 Autoroute 10 (Bonaventure - portion au nord du canal (boul. urbain))
mcgill a répondu à un sujet de mtlurb dans Infrastructures
On that note, could Wellington street be rerouted to its original tunnel (with some modifications)? The tunnel is still there along with its ventilation towers, just east of the current Wellington bridge over the canal. If the bridge is removed, all that would be left is the train bridge just east of Wellington. In my opinion, this track should also go under the canal BUT it should stay underground all the way to Central station, thus removing the only remaining physical barrier in the area (once Bonaventure is redone). Now that would be one hell of a project! -
Après cela on s'étonne qu'il y aie tant de chialeurs pour tout les projets

Has anyone else noticed that the Crowne Plaza Hotel corner Berri/Sherbrooke is now a Doubletree by Hilton brand hotel? Anybody know if Crowne Plaza is planning on building a new hotel in Montreal?

Thanks WestAust. I'm glad to see that TopBord is a Quebec company. No real indication on the site as to why it's orange. I think you're right. The colour comes from the paper backing that is applied to the other layers. It makes sense to attract attention during construction, even if it's just to say "What's going on over there?"
-
To anyone who works in or knows about construction: I've been wondering, why the bright orange colour for what appears to be insulation? We've seen this on a few construction projects lately...

And the way they have integrated downtown with the river! Man, it's so well done that it feels like the city came before the river. p.s. They got some damn big buildings. Whoever has seen the Merchandise Mart knows what I'm talking about. Massive!

Purely speculating, but given what's written on the trailer on the left of Gilbert's photo, could be that there was some sort of infiltration between the masonry (exposed grey) wall and the beige covering that's being removed. I seem to remember that the pieces of wood were added a while back to reinforce the beige wall because it was starting to sag.
-
Even if empty lots run out, there are dozens and dozens of 20-30 storey buildings (pretty much all the grey concrete ones scattered around the city)that can be demolished to make way for taller towers. This happens regularly in large American cities. Even buildings that are pretty old and would probably be "heritage" buildings if they were in Montreal. When the price is right, the work gets done!

One of our greatest buildings, the Sun Life building! Check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Life_Building http://edificesunlife.ca/en/photosdeledificesunlife.html

I walked by today; the hole is about 3 to 4 metres deep and occupies the whole plot. Hopefully the construction of this new building will motivate the owners of the neighbouring buildings fix them up; many of them are in a sad state.

Any particular reason for sending two? Just wondering...

Does the Delta Hotel and its restaurant Le Tour de Ville have any say on the height of buildings going up nearby? After all, the restaurant could eventually lose its competitive edge if all there is to see as you sit in the restaurant are offices...
-
The proposed building could have a rounded corner (a la Crystal/Roc Fleuri) at Metcalfe/Maisonneuve. Perhaps having large windows on the ground floor (similar to the ones at Bens) could be an option. The bricks would have to go.

Actually, Phase 3 is quite similar to Phases 1 and 2. They are located a little further west, next to Montpellier Train Station, and were built in the last 2-3 years.
