  1. From what I'm reading, I don't think he didn't know that Montreal was predominantly French...but rather he didn't know much about the French language and therefore was a contribution to his adventures here. For example, not knowing French meant he didn't know what he was eating. It's not that he didn't know that Montreal is predominantly French, rather he just didn't know the French language. And please...save the "Ignorant Americans" b.s....you'd be surprised that although they are constantly being portrayed as "ignorant", they know a lot about the world than you think (I'm saying this because of personal experiences with Americans).

Hey Habsfan, Yes you are right about the 1998-2001 era. It was a sad time to be a Montreal Canadiens fan and it was quite a surprise to see that no one in the province was willing to purchase the Habs. However that was a different time and is not representative of the situation we are in today. Back then, the dollar was at $0.62 US, the team was losing money and they weren't making the playoffs. Today, the dollar is at par, we have a new collective bargaining agreement which introduced the cap, and the team is doing very well. The way things are going right now, yes we can fill another Bell Centre-sized arena for a hockey game. I remember several years ago when there used to be thousands of empty seats (sometimes attendence levels dipped lower than 18,000), but those were the dark ages. The Habs have embarked on a new marketing campaign and our team is more popular than ever. That's just my two cents.

We can probably fill 2 Bell Centres-sized Arenas in Montreal with the current ticket prices...and maybe 4 if the prices we significantly lower. Bringing back the Montreal Maroons would be an excellent idea. However, as mentioned, it would be either very difficult or impossible. The NHL would probably be more favourable to adding another team in Toronto than in Montreal any ways. One reason why Ottawa got a hockey team in 1992 and not Hamilton was that even though Hamilton's bid for a team was better, they were too close to other NHL markets (Toronto, Buffalo, Detroit). It is quite evident that the NHL does not want to have its already fragile NHL markets fragmented. That said, I'm sure Montreal can support two, if not three NHL teams! Maybe if someone is rich enough and presents a viable bid for an expansion team in Montreal then its a possibility.
  4. I wish them the best of luck. I hope they can offer something to linguistic minorities that the other parties have failed to offer.
  5. Habsfan, if you had to speculate...how of the proposed towers would you see going up first?
  6. Ottawa and Moncton are also pretty bilingual, but I think Montreal takes the cake. Hey Kilgore, where did you find these statistics?

The new Saputo Stadium is too small! They should have built something in the 20,000-25,000 seat range!
  8. Amen! Actually same here. Besides who cares how people "perceive" our province. Are peoples perceptions a threat to a culture or language? no. The French language in Quebec has flourished in Quebec throughout its 400-year history, regardless of peoples "perceptions".
  9. Your experience is completely the opposite from what I experience. I happen to travel a lot and I've met different people from around the world. Some people even end up trying to speak French to me...I just tell them I speak English and that Montreal is actually a bilingual city. If you think my comment is illogical, then so is yours...how can you base your opinion on the "americans you spoke to"?
  10. Habsfan I gotta disagree with you on this one; pretty much everyone in the United States, or the world for that matter, knows that Quebec is a French province. I've travelled around the world and when I tell people I'm from Montreal, they always ask "oh, so do you speak French"? I'd like to have your point of view on this one as why you feel Americans, or anyone else for that matter, sees Montreal as a "place just like the rest of Canada".
  11. How about moving these towers a couple of blocks west? The corner of Mountain and Rene-Levesque should be the home of an office tower, not these Condos. Moving this project should 2 or 3 blocks west, outside the CBD, would make a lot more sense!
  12. I shop at Wal-Mart all the time. Personally, I'm thankful they offer low prices. If you don't want to shop at Wal-Mart, then it's simple...JUST DON'T SHOP THERE! Too bad for Germany, IMO.
  13. I kinda like the hotel's design. Anyways, its good to see hotels going up in and around the airport. It means more and more people are staying in our city and don't necessarily have to travel all the way to downtown to get a room.
  14. Is this stadium expandable past 17,000? (hey my first post! what took me so long to find this place?)
