  1. Today, Mirabel is an outdated airport from conception to design (though the architecture of the terminal is fabulous in its own right ). ADM has done a remarkable job at Dorval and in fact, by re-using the existing terminal and renovating it for 21st century standards, has proven to be a "Green" project. PET is quite pleasant to use given the hideous state of airports around the world - who wants all that congestion and traffic associated with airports that have 30 million + passengers and has lineups on the runway to take-off that last up to 40 minutes. It is a luxury to have an airport that has the kind of services Montreal for its size. Travellers are starting to by-pass major hubs instead preferring to transit at an airport like Montreal.
  2. It's a little irritating that she has to point out that all those interviewed were Anglophones. Saying that they were all Montrealers isn't good enough?? I find it slightly derogatory. Not to mention and out-of-date mentality. For me, there is no difference. We are Montrealers. BTW, I have read the piece and Mlle Audet is wrong.
  3. This looks like a fabulous project. Well-done from a design point of vue. Converting this office building to residential is the right move in this sector and the additions I think will be much welcome to the neighborhood as well. It looks like a quality project.
  4. Yes, the Montreal Gazette is a terrible paper. But a lot of it has to do with the fact that it is part of the Canwest media conglom. Recycled stories in every paper in all the big cities of the country that makes it un-necessary to hire good local journalists. It's also trying to be a paper to everyone - demographically speaking. And while I don't think it is exclusive to English-Quebecers, people of diverse backgrounds feel left out of the political discourse in Quebec, thus the tone of this article.
  5. That sucks for Vancouver. As for Montreal: we'll see a 50 floor 200m residential building in the future. I am optimistic. I would rather we distinguish our skyline by having fewer, far more special skyscrapers than many forgettable ones. I think all 5 of our biggies are unique and well-representative of their architectural periods. What Montreal needs is a tower like the Gherkin in London (30 St Mary Axe) - it's only 40 floors but what a FOCAL point for London. WOW!!
  6. well, that middle building (in the 1st pic) is a stunner; I wasn't aware of that one.
  7. I have a BIG problem with this emplacement for the MSO. I mean, the site choice seems like such an afterthought. Tucked away in the corner on some side-street. Not to mention, it looks a little tight, adding the my earlier comment: an afterthought. I just think the MSO deserves a more prominent place in the downtown core. It doesn't have to be in the QDS. I would love to see it on R-L at Bleury and used as both an anchor and a link between the QIDM and the QDS. My other comment: it really compromises the architectural integrity of PDA.
  8. This is good news... that means there IS a chance that we get a better/taller building with better architecture. Obviously it won't happen soon. The other high possibility is that the new owner doesn't plan to do anything with it and may simply hold on to it until market conditions improve and pass it on to another buyer.
  9. I agree that we need grand buildings surrounding the square. Certainly that Rogers project was/is a great example of what is needed as a North anchor. The renderings looked phenomenal. I could see a mid or high-rise hotel on one of the sites as well.
  10. The city lets a lot better get demolished all the time. Why would this building on an insignificant street corner be any different? That said, this building may be old, but what exactly is the historical significance worth preserving? Especially given that this neighborhood is re-inventing itself and on the edge of the financial core? It's a dump. Let's call it that. If it were greystone with carvings or details on the edges I would be the first to stand in front of the wrecking ball.
  11. I think we are looking at not just a new civic square, but THE civic square for Montreal. I do say I think it is very grand indeed. Any square that has steps is almost always guaranteed to have people gathering, regardless of events.
  12. hmmm... I was not a fan of this design in renderings... and I am even less of a fan as it nears completion. Yikes. The new "tower" portion looks really dull and kind of cheap. Like a big box suburban store with 20 floors.
  13. Environmental impact... hmmm. If the autoroute is falling down are we really going to study whether it needs to be replaced? DUH... this is one of the problems, we are great at studying things and setting up commissions.
  14. ugh, total tear down. But, being realistic, it does need a re-glassing. I always wondered why the master plan for McGill College never included a 5 star hotel.
  15. OMG, this makes me excited. Imagine, a developer going out to find a starchitect. I appreciate his observations and maybe, Montreal has been sleepy for awhile but is starting to awaken. The next boom ....
  16. Wealthy people today are hard to tell apart these days. People who have multi-millions in the bank wear gap shorts and flip flops all over the place everyday. There is so much more wealth in the world today people who do a lot of things by themselves. That said, the banner is not strange at all.
  17. I think 32 floors for Sherbrooke street West is pretty tall and a perfect height for the area. (Frankly, I can't believe that the zoning there allows for it!) Comparatively, anything more than 35 floors would not be built along 5th Avenue or Central Park West along the parkside in NYC. Most buildings are 12-20 floors. As for the design, I can't imagine a glass building on that part of Sherbrooke street. Would I prefer brick with limestone. Hell yes!
  18. The slate covering is indeed what makes it so special. Peter Dickinson (architect) was very conscious of the surrounding buildings and the quality of the stone structures around the Square.
  19. This hotel building isn't exactly in some far off corner in a bad neighborhood. I mean, c'mon, Sherbrooke street West at Peel street?! Can't get much more prime than that! And they couldn't find a buyer? I find it strange. Though perhaps the problems with the union and workers is not a big secret and turned many buyers off. I can't imagine this hotel is going to be abandoned for long. It'll be interesting to watch.
  20. CIBC is a mid century modernist masterpiece. Never ever to be "updated". Certain buildings should be landmarked.
  21. Does anyone think this project will be put on hold or cancelled? Marriott is bracing for difficult times.
  22. Believe me, the developer doesn't care about preserving the elegance and the height of PVM. Neither do the folks at SITQ over at PVM. In fact, if the developer were of a certain kind, he would deliberately build to the max of 200m to surpass PVM. In fact, I think a slender tower (of more creative architectural shape) at 200m would actually be better for PVM as it may help it stand out more. PVM is so massive (volume-wise) that not much can really block it. As we see, you don't have to build tall to hide beautiful buildings as is the case with the Banque National over on Beaver Hall Hill - it completely erases the Bell tower from the skyline and it is basically the same height.
  23. I have said it before but.... it is shame that this site is getting this project. I think it is a squandered opportunity to built something really special. In this day and age, there is no better way to get your city MAJOR international attention than by building some serious architectural statement. That is simply the way things work today. Montreal used to be like that. But to re-iterate another comment, there is just no competitive streak among the very few Montreal development firms and I believe, a lack of vision. It is as mediocrity at its finest. It doesn't cost that much more to hire a Jean Nouvel or Rem Koolhaus believe it or not. I have been involved with a project in NYC and Jean Nouvel cost 600K. I think what Montreal needs is a new developer to enter the scene - committed to Montreal - who shakes things up.
