Parking garages are typically simple structures that don't require a terribly huge amount of engineering. Some can be elaborate, but most are not. They are obviously more expensive to build than a surface lot, but consider:

 

The land you save by stacking your parking allows you to build something else/lease/sell the rest of your land, possibly for profit!

 

Not to mention the desirability factor!

 

My girlfriend and I go to the casino at least 3-4 times a month. (We go there solely for bar and have some drinks, we don't actually gamble). The only reason we go the casino instead of some other bar is the free indoor parking. Free.. indoor.. parking. No hassles. Blizzard 50cm snow? No problem.

 

You know what I just found? I was in Ottawa with some friends for dinner, right in the city centre next to the Parliament buildings.

 

At the "World Exchange Tower" (something like this) on Queen St., just on the other side of the block next to the Parliament buildings, free indoor parking all weekend, and yes, even on a Saturday night at 8:45 PM plenty of spaces available! Even larger spaces reserved for pickups and SUV's, which when you're in a pickup (I wasn't) is really nice.

 

FREE PARKING oh boy how I love free parking And I mean free, not free if you buy dinner at the restaurants (which were closed...) in the building (though the movie theatre did have a poster offering free parking if you saw a movie, presumably at any time during the week). And right turns on red! Yippee

You know what I just found? I was in Ottawa with some friends for dinner, right in the city centre next to the Parliament buildings.

 

At the "World Exchange Tower" (something like this) on Queen St., just on the other side of the block next to the Parliament buildings, free indoor parking all weekend, and yes, even on a Saturday night at 8:45 PM plenty of spaces available! Even larger spaces reserved for pickups and SUV's, which when you're in a pickup (I wasn't) is really nice.

I'm a big believer in balance. And i'm a big believer in our amazing downtown. To get people to come to our downtown, we need accessibility. That means good public transportation, but also some parking too. Because let's face it... people in the suburbs will go to Dix30 or other mega-malls instead of downtwon becaue of the parking hassle. But if we add some free indoor parking to the deal... we might just generate a lot of extra activity!

That means good public transportation, but also some parking too. Because let's face it... people in the suburbs will go to Dix30 or other mega-malls instead of downtwon becaue of the parking hassle. Maybe building some downtown vertical parking lots (looking like office buildings) near Ste-Catherine on empty lots could help in that matter.

There was actually a lot of public transit going on there, at any given time you'd see two or more buses going up and down Rideau St. (then again, there is no subway in Ottawa so perhaps it is "hidden" for us), but public transit is not useful for a Montrealer (unless you take those "Chinese bus" that seem to go back and forth the 40/417 all the time).

 

Apparently the City of Ottawa doesn't charge for parking on-street or in municipal lots downtown on weekends, and neither did this Tower, though another parkade in the "Byward Market" area was open and charging (but over there the foot and vehicle traffic was much more intense), but it is only a few minutes walk...

In the city you go to a Rona to buy light bulbs and nails. Occasionally you might need bigger things and if you need to renovate something you hire somebody.

 

In the suburbs you go to a Rona because everybody is, by default, into constant home renovation. Maintaining these McMansions is expensive (in time and money) and understandably most people rather do it themselves.

Nuance: everyone is in constant home renovations because they own their homes whereas denser areas, people are in majority renters and they couldn't give a rats ass about keeping their homes in a good shape ( and with current Régie du Logement rules, it's useless for a owner to keep his house in a good shape too).

 

McMansions?? whats your definition of a McMansion? because I could swear that if Rona and the likes were after those owners in Greater Montreal they would go under.

Il faut pas comparer Ottawa avec Montréal trop vite! Sur ce point, la vie et l'attractivité du centre-ville d'Ottawa la fin de semaine, une comparaison avec Sherbrooke serait plutôt de mise. Je m'explique. À Ottawa, tout se passe dans les centres commerciaux. Même avec du stationnement gratuit, le¸centre-ville est mort la fin de semaine. Tout le monde est au Rideau, St-Laurent ou Plateau de Hull! À Montréal, le centre-ville est vivant la fin de semaine!
