  1. A 50 story tower would have stuck out like a sore thumb. No thanks.
  2. I was all excited seeing how much traffic was on this thread. I thought "they must have shown something pretty great"....and didn't take into account the justifiable outrage this has generated. There is NO WAY this should be approved by the city. They have a minimum density requirement on this lot which this building DOES NOT respect if built as per the renderings. I'm sorry, we just can't roll over and take it up the butt because a developer wants to invest in Montreal corporate real estate (for once). This may be personal but I also think it looks like an architectural abortion of too many ideas looped into one glass-clad monstrosity. This certainly looks like it belongs in London. London, Ontario that is....
  3. That right there pisses me off to no end. All that for a tower that has (IMO) no business being in this location.
  4. I must be the only person who is completely at a loss as to why they would build it in this one spot, sandwiched up against the Bell Center when there are so many other spots (ie: parking lots) within walking distance from this one. It just doesn't make sense to me...
  5. Looks like a load of Duplo blocks. MUCH better than the original renderings but still not exactly what I expected a professional institution to look like.
  6. Sorry, I find the Hanicot proposal ridiculous. Wind turbines? With the NIMBY enabling culture we have here in Quebec, I can only imagine the furor that will cause. Not to mention the absolutely hideous tree-like red sculptures. If I wouldn't know any better, I'd say this guy was one of the principles who designed the multi-coloured abortion that is Palais Des Congres.
  7. Tridome is sub-contracting Module II as they did back when they worked together on the Boucherville store.
  8. Where did you hear this would be the largest in North America? From Triodome who are the primary contractors: From my searching, there are stores in Chicago (428,000 sq.ft.) and Tampa (353,000 sq.ft) that are actually larger than the whole lot the present Ikea is built on....
  9. Rogers already has a new Montreal head office. Telus "headquarters"? Menthinks not. I know enough people who work in their offices here in Montreal and the talk has been about moving many jobs OUT of Montreal into their new national headquarters in Vancouver. The rest would likely be consolidated into their building on the corner of the 13 & 40 which is only ~half leased out.
  10. Actually, Mississauga began building upwards because they simply ran out of developable space around certain prime locations. Hence, they had to build vertically rather than horizontally.
  11. Looks like bringing a building up to code.
  12. Honestly, it boggles my mind why they would build right there when there are plenty of vacant lots all around that area. That small "square" with its statues, placards, etc ties in the whole surrounding area. It really is a shame that they could be taking it over...
  13. Looks like a mini version of Evolo to me.
  14. The official posting says 32 floors. This isn't the first time we heard this. I believe a change of thread title is in order.
  15. No hate at all but your obsession with high structures is blinding you to the market realities in Laval. In order to make a 40+ floor tower with architectural significance (ie: not the Russian ghetto influence of Villa Latella, Quintessence or any other 10+ story building in Laval for that matter) a developer would have to charge significantly more than most people in Laval would be willing to pay. Now you MAY trot out Marina Le Commodore which looks good, is made up of nearly 60 stories and will charge a small fortune for many of its units. Nonetheless, you'll likely be turning a blind eye to the fact that it is on the waterfront which instantly increases value and no 40+ story tower can be built in that area without investing in very, very expensive foundation reinforcing work due to the high water table. In essence, a developer COULD build what Quebec would consider a "supertall" but there are things to consider: - Due to the ROI involved through selling the units at a sub-premium price (it being Laval and all), lower end materials would have to be used to make it profitable. - A developer who would want to build something this large would likely spend the money wisely on a downtown location instead of Laval to ensure the highest ROI - The main areas for development of high priced condos in Laval is the waterfront, an area rife with issues and money pitfalls due to the high water table.
  16. A suburban wasteland where a 2 bedroom condo in one of those towers goes for 475K+. In Laval you would be lucky to get 325K for that same unit. There is no market for this kind of tower in Laval and no benefit to any developer who wants to build something like this. Period.
  17. New renderings will be released in November. What I can say is that the final hospital reflects the look of the Shriner's proposal. About 50% glass / 50% white brick.
