  1. the windsor proposal is better. one route gets us to the airport. the other gets us to the airport quicker, brings back a landmark building and gets us a large new development. why is anyone opposing this? because it's montreal.
  2. you went from a cogent point (the practicality of large-surface stores) and then descended to a sort of weird culture-war swipe (all renters trash their apartments).
  3. i didn't mean to imply that the mackay had anything to do with ethnicity, but instead that this language stuff is not helping our city get bigger and busier.
  4. the thing is, toronto doesn't care about anything except how to bring more money, power, people and influence to toronto. that's why they have 68-storey towers rising two km away from the financial district. montreal seems to care about, weird, divisive, infinite discussions such as this one. that's why we have weird, infinite discussions instead of towers (le mackay).
  5. what's wrong with best buy and future shop? why are they "craptastic?" why shouldn't i be able to buy a tv or an xbox downtown? i mean, sure, maybe we'd all like a string of vintage lunchbox stores and interpretive jazz museums, but then again, maybe we wouldn't. montreal is a real city and these are major canadian retail stips. they're not fantasy props for kids from ontario who have just moved here and are still marvelling over how exotic it all is.
  6. i live in the old port. it's a beautiful area that deserves high-end architecture, not historical pastiche. quality is what will "fit." this is perfect.
  7. fuck green space. there, i said it. what a vague and useless term this is anyway, a term thrown as a sop to those who don't particularly like either cities or buildings in the first place. i am sick of green space.
  8. tremendous - modern and innovative.
  9. it's gross, but once the other one is sort of looming over top, a very jumbled, piled-up "big city" aesthetic might occur.
  10. we should pay more. why do we always think things should basically be free here?
  11. there shouldn't be a closing time. it's nanny state as hell.
  12. my comment. it will anger them i bet: there are a lot of canadians who clearly derive satisfaction from the idea of a declining montreal, whether or not it's true. as for me, i am anglo and happy here. canada? well... look: i suppose i have some residual warmth for it, but really, what am i supposed to do with it? move to calgary? toronto's great, but the rest is a bit outdoorsy, a bit suburban and a bit staid. it has too many of the sort of sunday-paper fist-shakers you see in this comments section. it's angrier than it lets on. it's a bit too much like maclean's magazine, actually.
  13. yeah - the toronto media. complete with a royal family article. canada just seems so.... RELEVANT, no?
  14. well, you do realize that your tastes are not universally shared at least, don't you? i don't idolize it, but it's certainly part of a balanced diet. we cannot design cities specifically to humor the fantasies of people from ancient and unkempt places.
  15. I don't think Malek really likes anything that is sort of gritty/openly-industrial/attached to the 1940s. A lot of us do, though, because whether it was sketches of Metropolis in Superman comics or similar cartoon backgrounds, the image of the giant Gilded Age city became very tied in with a North American urban ideal. Montrealers have a lot of this because Montreal actually was very big and prominent during this era, with big stone buildings, ocean liners, telegraph offices and the like. We're not Dubai... it will never be all about the here, all about "progress."
  16. what an irresponsible piece of shit. that parking lot is on a major square.
  17. i find pedestrian streets in the western world to have a sort of provincial, "minor city" quality. i'd prefer running a streetcar and one lane of west-east traffic.
  18. there is no way bumbaru would have accepted the construction of pvm.
  19. you have to have little buildings in between the big buildings downtown, or else you end up with dallas. this little guy will add a lot of complexity to this block once 900 goes in, and it's better to have two buildings than one.
