Rays explain details of Montreal plan: ‘This not a staged exit.’

ST. PETERSBURG — Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg was adamant in explaining Tuesday that the plan to split the season with Montreal is a solution to make the team successful in both markets and not a step toward leaving the Tampa Bay area:

“This is not a staged exit. That thought has never entered my mind.”

Nor Sternberg said is it a leverage play to get a new stadium.

Rather, he said, the volume of 81 games is an issue and by splitting the schedule it will make the team more successful in both markets.

Sternberg said several times they are “champions of the Tampa Bay area” and see this as a plan to keep baseball in the area beyond the use agreement for the Trop that ends in 2027.

But that is only if this plan, which he called a "creative and sensible solution,'' works.

Sternberg said he it would be “highly unlikely” they would pursue a full-time home in the Tampa Bay if this plan doesn’t work. He said "I don’t see it happening in St. Petersburg and would be hard-pressed to see it working in Tampa from what I know.''

Sternberg said he is not planning to sell the team (but would take on some Montreal investors as minority partners), and that even if this doesn’t work they plan to honor the use agreement at the Trop through it’s 2027 end.

Sternberg said the potential sites for the new stadium to be built in the Tampa Bay area are subject to exploration, but that the downtown waterfront site of Al Lang Stadium is "definitely a possibility.''

He also confirmed that shifting spring training back to the Tampa Bay area from Port Charlotte is "definitely on the table.''

Top Rays officials called the media session to start explaining publicly why moving half their home games to Montreal each season is the best and potentially only way to keep Major League Baseball in the Tampa Bay area long term.

Getting fans and area leaders to believe them — that this is not just a ploy to re-start stadium negotiations locally or a plan to relocate and leave the area completely — will be a major-league challenge.

Rien de bien nouveau suite à la conférence autre que le proprietaire des Rays ne croit plus que Tampa pourrait avoir une équipe à temps complet. Le temps partiel ne semble pas plaire à personne, ni à Tampa, ni à Montreal. Je me demande vraiment si c'est une pièce de théâtre qui cache autre chose ou si ils ont vraiment l'idée de partager l'équipe.....

Ca semble quand même très positif pour nous :

On dirait du sabotage pour qu'éventuelement plus personne à St. Pete n'ai intérêt à se battre jusqu'au bout du bail...

Ca fait près de 10 ans que Sternberg prétend vouloir un nouveau stade, mais il n'a jamais été prêt à mettre plus de 150 millions. Comment croire qu'il pourrait réussir en offrant la moitié moins de matchs à Tampa?

Et comment le groupe de MTL pourrait maintenant préférer être actionnaire minoritaire d'une équipe qui passerait que des demi-saisons à MTL, et rentabiliser l'invetissement sur le terrain et le stade en plus? Ca ne tient pas la route, en plus la MLB prévoit une expansion une fois que la situation des Rays sera reglée.

I honestly feel bad for the fans in Tampa. I felt the sting of a half season in Puerto Rico. It sucks big time. Just do it already.  This is ridiculous. It is bad for both baseball fans in both cities. 

Stop insulting people's intelligence and just freaking rip the bandage off already and get it done.

Je crois que c'est ce qu'ils essaient de faire. Présentement, s'ils arrachent le band-aid, ce n'est pas seulement le poil qui va suivre mais aussi la peau et le muscle jusqu'à l'os. Je crois qu'on essaye une stratégie pour que juste le poil reste collé sur le band-aid, peut-être un peu de peau.

Les Nationals porteront l'uniforme des Expos

Tandis que les rumeurs du retour d'une concession du baseball majeur à Montréal s'intensifient, un autre club rendrait hommage aux Expos le 6 juillet.

Les Nationals de Washington porteraient l'uniforme bleu poudre et la casquette tricolore des Expos, a rapporté mercredi le quotidien Washington Post.

Ils poseraient ce geste afin de souligner le 50e anniversaire de la première saison des Expos, en 1969. Leurs adversaires pour l'occasion, les Royals de Kansas City, porteraient également un uniforme rétro - possiblement gris.

La formation de la capitale fédérale américaine offrirait également de la nourriture traditionnelle canadienne pour l'événement, toujours selon le quotidien américain. Le Nationals Park vendrait notamment à ses partisans de la poutine et des sandwichs à la viande fumée.

L'ex-joueur étoile des Expos Vladimir Guerrero devrait être sur place pour l'occasion.
