  1. A very refreshing article. It seems that someone with the potential to influence can think rationally. I agree, a height reduction would be fine by me, if the thing got built.

  3. True. And if I remember correctly, the Sum of All Fears was supposed to be set in Baltimore.
  4. le film "The Score" (Robert Deniro, Edward Norton) a ete filme ici. Il y avait aussi "The Sum of All Fears" et "The Whole Nine Yards".
  5. Happy Canada Day. Grab a hot dog and a beer (in moderation, of course)) and enjoy! At the very least, its a beautiful summer's day, thus far, something everyone can enjoy.
  6. It looks a little better now that most of the red brick has been installed (I would see it on a daily basis from the 162 bus route to Villa Maria). I must admit, I can't remember the last time there was a 12+ floor development in NDG, so I was pleased to see it go up, if only for that reason. It's good to see a little density along one of the more busy neighborhood's busier arteries.
  7. Looking at this rationally: 1) The area residents are overwhelmingly in favor 2) The local business community is in favor 3) The city likes the proposal 4) It will be election time soon, and Tremblay needs a statement There really is no reason why this project shouldn't materialize... However, for some reason, and I sincerely hope that I'm wrong, I have a bad feeling. Time will tell.
  8. Yeah, we were at the back, on the left side to profit from the view of PVM. The fourth speaker had a great point, I thought, when he said that the successful completion of the project would spin-off into more projects for the area. I wonder what Panzini thought, having designed the other 18ish storey building close by.
  9. At about 5 in the afternoon, I decided it might be interesting so I went with a friend of mine. We stayed for 4 out of the 6 speakers. The first speaker was an elderly man who could remember a time when "makay was a beautiful street" and was very much opposed to the project, saying that the city and its master plan lacks vision and that it would be wrong to develop the north side of rene-levesque on a project-by-project basis, especially with such a tower. After he finished reading his 10 minute speach the conseil asked him questions, which in my opinion, exposed the weakness of his arguments, as all of his answers were exactly the same, and were very circular. He essentially just kept saying that makay is a nice street and shouldn't have a skyscraper, and that the city's master plan is weak. The second speaker was from Habitation Ville-Marie and was only concerned with affordable housing. He requested, on behalf of his organization that the units be sold in a certain price range, and that Ali Khan should invest more money into a fund for affordable housing. Otherwise, and when asked by the conseil, he and his organization had no reservations with the project itself. The third speaker was the first speaker who actually lived in the area, and said that the area badly needed revitalization and repopulation. He was in favour of the project, applauding the design because of its reflective windows that would enable the sun to reach his home (no joke: he spent a good 8 minutes talking about reflective windows, even applauding Panzini for the Crystal's design. Panzini, who didn't design Crystal, was in the audience and kept gesturing to the crowd that he had no involvement). It should be mentioned that this speaker preferred a reduced 20 storey tower. The fourth speaker was an area resident and merchant who prepared his own powerpoint presentation. He spoke passionately about the area and the project, and was very much in favour of it, as proposed. He even directly refuted the claims of the first speaker by using sections of the Montreal Master Plan in his powerpoint! When asked by the conseil if he would still support phase 1, if the tower would be excluded he said that such a result would be useless, and that the tower must be built - all or nothing. At the very end of his speach, the crowd (minus the first speaker) gave him a loud round of applause! Ali Khan and Panzini himself even went to shake his hand. I think from this, it was fairly obvious that the majority in attendance strongly support the proposition, including the tower.
  10. 3.75 was 2008 (july?), so if all goes well we should be at 3.8 by the end of this year and at 3.9 by the 2011 census.
  11. I mean audacious in a good sense, that this project is bold in terms of design and in terms contrast (to the parking lots which essentially surround it), which is what that sector badly needs.
  12. It seems the CPM would actually rather have parking lots in the radius of protection than an audacious building that barely enters the perimeter. Or better yet, how would the CPM like it if Ali Khan demolished the Victorian buildings and built the tower anyway? The promoter is trying to make all the necessary compromises to bring life to that section of downtown, I don't see what's not to appreciate. This negative ruling on their part is an utter joke.
  14. Its nice to see a crane in the heart of downtown, for once. I almost wish it could just remain there to give the illusion that we're building something big.
  15. Is it possible to attend these opinion session? If so, it might make for an interesting evening of highrise enthusiasts vs. NIMBYs, if attended. Also, 34 floors of condo probably wouldn't pass 120m (le 400 is 37 and is slightly less than 120m), so it would respect the height limit, if I'm not mistaken. The only thing is the density factor. Let's hope this thing breaks ground!
  16. Woah.
  18. Understood. But is there a height limit of say 120m for this particular lot, rather than just the 232.5m general limit?
  19. 33 floors, how many would be office floors for 250,000 sq. ft? Maybe 120 meters on this thing? Is there a height limit for the location?
  20. speaking of the EV1, there was an excellent documentary on CBC newsworld tonight, about how GM (among others) destroyed the electric cars. Karma maybe?

hey, this way Ontario will have 3 crappy teams

Apparently Saku Koivu is outta here, unless he's signed by July 1st. Oh and Toronto might seriously get a second team. http://habsinsideout.com/main/19539 http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=276141

I don't think anyone is blaming the entire city, but it certainly sheds a bad image on the city as a whole, from an outside point of view, and contributes to the fact that no free agents want to sign here, no matter how much money we're willing to throw at them.

    Canadiens de Montréal

I personally don't think we deserved to win this series period, but I agree, a definite lack of class in booing the anthem. Afterall, how does booing the American anthem really affect the Bruins anyway, the majority of whom are probably Canadian? It serves no purpose, paints a negative image on our city, and is just disrespectful.

    Canadiens de Montréal

The fallout from this season will be interesting to watch... Question: Saku Koivu's last game in Montreal? Yes or No? The list goes on... Gainey? Kovalev? I think the team is on the verge of a major rebuilding process. We can't sign free agents because they don't want to come here and the team we have isn't good enough. I think it will be a long next few years for les Habitants.
