Train makes its last stop in Rigaud

Bus service to begin on Friday Service that has been running since 1889 to make its last run from old Rigaud station

BY ALYCIA AMBROZIAK, THE GAZETTE JUNE 30, 2010

A more than century-old service will end today, when the train to Rigaud makes its last run.

"The train has been running without interruption since 1889. But the last train to Rigaud will not leave commuters stranded," said Manon Charest, director general at the Conseil Intermunicipal de Transport La Presqu'Ile (CIT la Presqu'Ile), which provides bus service to Hudson, Vaudreuil-Dorion, Pincourt, Ile Perrot and Notre Dame de l'Ile Perrot, and beginning Friday, to Rigaud.

The CIT la Presqu'Ile buses ferry passengers to the Vaudreuil train station, a hub that is served by 25 trains on weekdays.

Beginning Friday, the CIT la Presqu'Ile will provide a new twice-daily weekday bus service taking passengers from Rigaud to the Vaudreuil train station.

The bus service will leave Rigaud every weekday morning at 6:12 and 7:02 a.m. and stop at five stops along Highway 342, commonly known as Harwood Blvd., on the way to the Vaudreuil train station. Afternoons, the bus will leave the Vaudreuil station for Rigaud at 5:25 and 6:41 p.m.

A similar CIT bus service is scheduled to begin in St. Lazare in September.

Rigaud town manager Chantal Lemieux said the handful of residents who were commuting by train will be better off with the buses.

"There will be more service available to our residents, as we only had one train departure in the morning and one arrival in the evening," Lemieux said Monday. "Now, we will have two departures in the morning and two at the end of the day."

Train service to Rigaud, 60 kilo-metres west of downtown Montreal, was cancelled after the town of Rigaud announced it could not afford to pay about $300,000 annually -up from $160,000 -that the Agence metropolitaine de transport (AMT), Montreal's regional public transit authority, was demanding to keep the service alive.

Hudson will be the new terminus for what was known as the Dorion/ Rigaud line, a service heavily used by West Island commuters.

In an earlier interview, Lemieux said the town of Rigaud does not know what will happen to the train tracks in Rigaud.

"There had been talk of making it into a bicycle path, but it is not our property," she said. "It belongs to CP Rail. And I don't think they'll be dismantling the tracks any time soon."
