Effronté? :silly:

Replace "urban planner" with "astrophysics phd student" and observe the fallacy in action.

" Pff, you think you're an expert in physics just because you've spent years studying it.. what with your fancy formulas and equations... you elitist! Get down from your ivory tower. Real men understand the laws of thermodynamics by pragmatic every day living! "

You're wrong again, if I ask an astrophysicist to give an example for, of this or that theory he would be able to do it, he would even be be able to give some real world applications.

Something you're still not able to do on a simple request I asked. God damn you're stubborn.

You're asking for an example of something that in absolute terms simply doesn't exist.

It would be like asking the physicist for an example of something that is impossible according to the laws of nature.

In absolute terms, increasing road capacity is never a necessity. Strictly speaking there are always better alternatives.

In practical terms, increasing road capacity can sometimes be a quick fix to a temporary problem, but if in the long run it's not ideal. If you're asking for a long-term permanent example and I simply cannot think of any.

Sorry man. Sans rancune.

So connecting two isolated villages together by road is a bad idea? Or considerably reducing travel time between two cities is also a bad idea?

lol man come on... an easy example.

Hangzhou Bay Bridge (simplified Chinese: 杭州湾大桥; traditional Chinese: 杭州灣大橋; pinyin: Hángzhōu Wān Dàqiáo) is a long highway bridge with a cable-stayed portion across Hangzhou Bay in the eastern coastal region of China. It connects the municipalities of Jiaxing and Ningbo in Zhejiang province. At 35.673 km (22 mi) in length, Hangzhou Bay Bridge is one of the longest trans-oceanic bridges in the world. Construction of the bridge was completed on June 14, 2007,[1] and an opening ceremony was held on June 26, 2007, to great domestic media fanfare. The bridge was not opened to public use until May 1, 2008, after a considerable period of testing and evaluation.[2] The bridge shortened the highway travel distance between Ningbo and Shanghai from 400 km (249 mi) to 280 km (174 mi) and reduced travel time from 4 to 2.5 hours.[3]

A rail link could have done the same job minus the pollution and other negative externalities. You have to understand the difference between "roads are 100% necessarily bad all the time" and saying that "better options exist and upgrading road capacity, strictly speaking and in absolute terms, is not a necessity". I'm not and have never implied the former, but I do maintain the latter, at least in absolute terms.

There's also an epistemological issue here. But I really don't feel like getting into that at 1am.

Montreal’s opposition parties are backing an alternative Turcot plan that would cut the project’s $3-billion price tag in half, with savings invested in public transit.

Mobilisation Turcot, a coalition of groups against the previous Liberal government’s project, delivered what they called a “Turcot diet plan” to Transport Quebec on Thursday.

They say the cost could be halved and construction time cut from five years to three by not moving Highway 20 and Canadian National tracks to the foot of the Falaise St. Jacques; and by not rebuilding part of the Ville Marie Expressway and the Montreal West Interchange.

They want reserved bus lanes on the Ville Marie in both directions between the Turcot and downtown, and suggest a light-rail transit system should be built.
