REM (ligne A) - Discussion générale

Maybe the “emergency” messages will let Caroline Dhavernas show off her silky voice in her perfect American English, too.

Hallucinant.

My original impression was that they were never planning to do full testing on the new SdC bridge before launching service.

CDPQ Infra explicitly said that the portion before the bridge from Brossard to Panama will be the one where they will test for a year. Which is exactly what they are doing now. Some nice low temperature conditions right now for the trials.

The critical bits to test in winter are power delivery from the overhead wires, reliable operation of doors, effect of snow cover on movement, etc. Those can be tested on the existing test track.

Which aspects need to be tested specifically on the new bridge in winter?

That's a good question. 2 decades ago, running a train over a suspension or cable stay bridge was considered a risky proposition, but there's absolutely nothing novel about it nowadays. I know as a fact that a bridge that long can shrink by as much as several meters during winter, but surely they have accounted for that. The same thing is true of rails. Given that we can have a 50 degree swing in a 24 hour period, that can cause some problems, but those problems are known. Could it be that the risk of frost on the wires is higher on the bridge because of the close presence of water? Again, that isn't a unique situation, but Montreal's climate can be rather brutal.

Condensation on the wires from water below. Or steam from water freezing on the wires. Or high winds from such an open space over water. So much more. Terrible planning.
