Grand Prix de Formule 1 de Montréal

I think I'm the only one who has posted in this thread that SUPPORTS the exit of this festival of pollution, noise and industrial lust.

 

Let it go. This is one of those circuses that make us really sick.

 

If the only way for Montreal to bring in these tourists is to send cars hurtling around a loop and putting the city under a haze of carbon monoxide, we're better off without them.

 

Car racing isn't Mother Teresa. It's marketing for the auto and oil industry, as well as a way for alienated and bored males to pretend to be taking part in something "important" and "international."

 

Replace it with a World Bicycle race or marathon. Car racing is both anachronistic and infantile.

 

if you care so much about environment

 

- these ppl who will come to race in bikes from all around the world will use airplaines who will polute the environment

 

- The PC that you used to post this thread and others is made of many oil related components. Sell it and live without one. you will say that you need it, well we need that money that the F1 and car industry brings to finance many government and city workers who get paid big time to pick their noses

Yeah like those bike race are much more ecological, every bike is followed by a car a X amount of motorcycles with cameras, stewards... much more ecological in the end.

I'm not a fan of car racing, but cars themselves are an essential transport mode in (industrialised) N. America.

...including Montreal. The core is dense and has frequent public transit, so it might give some people the illusion that everybody will just sell their cars because oil is too expensive and damaging.

In reality, most of Montreal outside the core grew with the automobile (like any NAmerican city), and roughly 70% of Montrealers commute by car (can anyone find the exact numbers?).

If you count suburbs, it's about 75% of car commuting in Greater Montreal. Of course the objective is to reduce that (with efficient alternatives), since it's not sustainable to let the number of cars increase exponentially; but like Malek often says, the auto & oil industry won't die anytime soon, especially in N. America.

there might be a disconnect between oil and cars in a forseeable future, but both will continue to be essential industries.

Why did Sepang boomed ? Because the government gave interest-free bonds and removed any taxes.

Honnêtement, qui ici a décidé de visiter une ville acceuillant la F1 après avoir vu son circuit à RDS un dimanche après-midi ??

Ça donne aucune visibilité. On voit des voitures tourner en rond pendant 1h30 sut de l'asphalte.

On n'apprend rien sur la ville hôte ou sur ses attraits.

 

Qui ici écoutait assidument les courses de F1 hors-Montréal ???

 

 

 

Le gouvernement, tant qu'à subventionner Bernie Ecclestone et une poignée de rednecks de 30 millions par année, devrait financer une campagne publicitaire internationale avec un budget de 30 millions par année pour promouvoir le tourisme à Montréal.

Je sais que la perte du grand prix pour moi dans l'événementiel, c'est 125,000$ de moins dans mon budget. C'est des employés qui travaillaient en temps supplémentaire et qui eux aussi faisait un petit peu plus d'argent que d'habitude et qui le dépensait en retombé indirect de l'événement. C'est couper les revenues de 28% en juin que je vais devoir trouver ailleurs que mes compétiteurs aussi vont chercher à remplacer la perte de leur part du gâteau du grand prix.

 

Je ne dis pas que je vais devoir fermer à cause de la perte du grand prix, mais ça donne un coup sur le budget.

En amérique du nord, dans une moindre mesure au Québec, les cotes d'écoutes de la F1 sont assez basses, mais en europe c'est une toute autre affaire.

 

Quand on parles de 300 millions de telespectateurs, d'une courses qui est diffusée prime time en europe le dimanche soir (la case horraire de TLMEP pour donner une idée de comparaison) aucune campagne de publicité va accoter cela.

 

Et quand vous ecoutez les émissions d'avant course dans les autres pays, il y a toujours un topo sur comment la ville est formidable, et vibre au rythme de la F1, des images de crescent, St-laurent, sans compter les nombreux "beauty shot" durant le reportage, qui montrent la biosphere, le centre-ville, les ponts victorias et j-c...
