The Bronfmans didn’t eviscerate the club nor sell it to MLB. It was originally Brochu and the gang of hobby-investors who destroyed the team after 94, followed by The Grifters (Loria & Samson in cahoots with Bud Selig) who flipped the team and high-tailed to Florida (which they then proceeded to bleed dry and and sell off). Stephen Bronfman and Jean Coutu were the only minority partners to keep paying up Loria’s cash calls, while he optioned on the other investors’ defaults and built up a 93% share of the ownership. There are plenty of reasons for the demise of the Expos in the 90s, but pinning it on the Bronfmans is a false narrative and revisionist history.

If the Bronfmans like baseball so much as they claim, they could have bought out the club to Brochu at a fraction of the price they will now pay in 2028 for a half-team divided in 2 cities. And they call themselves businessmen!!! They stuck to their ridiculous minority share back then while the club was sold to an American Gigolo. Shame on the Bronfmans!!! 100%.

The economy of Montreal (and the economy of baseball for that matter) was not the same in 2004 as it is now and for the forseable future.  Buying the Expos in 2004 would have been an even riskier endeavour that would have been to built a 50 stories building in downtown Montréal (and we have a few of those in construction right now).  Montréal is not the same market it was 15-20 years ago.

Bottom line is there is something systemic within the Montreal business community against professional sports both in terms of sponsorship and investment. For decades no one wanted to support the Expos, we all know that story if you are reading this thread. I mean, Charles Bronfman wanted to sell for 100 million and the city and the province had to kick in 33 million to hit that number, which he was already subsidizing by refusing 135 million US at the time and then no one was willing to put a penny more.

It was the same for the Canadiens, no one local was willing to buy the team when George Gillett bought them, and he was by far a much better owner than the Molson have been since. Who knows what would have happened had he no started Gillett Entertainment which is now Evenko to organize other events at the Molson Center and capitalize on them. Likely, would be run out of Toronto and not Montreal. In the end, only two bids, our friend Stephen Bronfman and Molson Brothers. Even the Molson deal was a S**t show needing a 75 million loan from the province, and a consortium of randos like Luc Bertrand and Michael Andlauer and 20% out of province.

Impact aren't much better, if the Saputo's want to sell, that franchise is dead in Montreal. When they needed inventors to get into MLS, Saputo had to try and get George Gillett because he couldn't find anyone local, and when that didn't materialize, we lost the franchise to Vancouver and had to wait 3 additional years before moving up. To this day, no matches are broadcast in English and the team is near the bottom in attendance in large part because of low corporate support.

Last year with the Alouettes it was the same thing, supposedly a ton of interest within the Montreal community, but it ends up coming down to a former Montrealer and his brother who haven't lived in the city for 20 years, Claridge (Stephen Bronfman) who can't come up with the money,  and ends up going to a bunch of unknowns from Hamilton after the league had to take the team over. Remember before that when the team moved from Baltimore, no one local stood up with an offer to Jim Speros, and it ended up going to Wettenhall.

Je trouve ça intéressant par contre j'ai hâte de voir le développement de tout cela disons que ça fait longtemps que le processus est enclenché. Je suis habituellement positif mais depuis la fameuse garde partagée et certain commentaires de M. Bronfman concernant le montage financier, j'ai un perdu de mon optimisme.
