MONTREAL - It is shaping up as a blockbuster year for Hollywood filming in Montreal. You already heard in this very space that Steven Spielberg is heading our way next year to shoot the film Robocopalypse, a 20th Century Fox/DreamWorks adaptation of the Daniel H. Wilson bestseller about a robot uprising. Also on his way to shoot in Montreal is disaster-epic master Roland Emmerich. The Godzilla/Day After Tomorrow/Independence Day auteur will be in our burgh to shoot the sci-fi movie Singularity.

Now comes the news that Sony Pictures will be shooting The Smurfs 2 in Montreal next year. Sony will be opening a production office here Jan. 30 and shooting begins April 28 on the sequel to the hits Smurfs movie, which was quite the sensation at the box office in Quebec.

With these three films, 2012 might just be the biggest year ever for Hollywood filming here. Even better, it will be the third-straight very hot year for foreign filming chez nous. The total for Hollywood shooting in town in 2010 was $214 million and Quebec Film Commissioner Hans Fraikin says the year-end tally will likely be higher than that this year.

There is also talk that the Sony Pictures Harry Houdini bio-pic might shoot here next year, though this one is not confirmed.

A top American film director has advised his fellow director Martin Scorsese against trying to make a new film based on Jo Nesbø’s crime novel Snømannen entirely on location in Norway. Norwegian officials aren’t pleased.

David Fincher, who has won Oscar nominations for his direction of films including The Social Network, told newspaper Aftenposten that he had a difficult and expensive experience trying to film scenes in Norway himself. Fincher has directed the new US version of the Swedish crime novel Menn som hater kvinnor (“Men who hate women,” but called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in English) and ran into challenges while filming a scene at Oslo’s main airport at Gardermoen.

“It was incredibly difficult to get permission to set up a camera,” Fincher told Aftenposten. “It was very expensive, too.” He thinks Montreal could be an alternative filming location for Scorsese’s version of “The Snowman.
