Ça peut vous sembler niaiseux de ma part, mais je suis fier d'avoir un homme coomme Kent Nagano comme Directeur Musical de L'OSM. Voilà quelqu'un qui pourrait occuper ce poste dans n'importe quelle ville du monde, et il a choisit notre ville! La construction de cette nouvelle salle était très importante pour que M Nagano reste avec nous.

 

En plus, comme cerise sur le sundae, M Nagano fait des efforts pour parler le français!

C'est pas niaiseux dutout. Tu as raison. Moi aussi je suis très content de l'avoir ici. Certains puristes disent qu'il n'est pas à la hauteur de sa réputation, mais moi je pense qu'il fait littéralement une petite révolution dans la façon de vendre l'orchestre au public. Il aime vraiment la ville, en tout cas. C'est pas du flan. Pour le français, il faut dire qu'il a été directeur de l'Orchestre national de France pendant plusieurs années, et à vécu à Paris. Il porte vraiment bien ce projet! Pis tout est dans les temps, dans les limites du budget. Je radote, mais cette réalisation est un exemple à suivre! Bravo sur toute la ligne.

Entièrement d'accord avec toi. Depuis qu'il est en poste, on dirait qu'on entend parler de l'OSM pas mal plus souvent!

Ça aussi c'est un bon point. Ce projet va même peut être se terminer avant la date prévue....ce qui serait du jamais vu à Montréal(prèsque )

À l'heure actuelle, on m'a dit qu'ils sont en train de replacer tous les abonnés actuels (pas évident: certains ont des sièges depuis longtemps! Ils ne veulent pas être lésés dans le redéploiement. Et comme la qualité de l'acoustique n'est pas encore connue, ni le déplacement du son dans la salle (en musique classique, ça a de l'importance), les abonnés prennent du temps à décider). Je pense qu'au printemps, la vente devrait être ouverte à tous.

Workers have just knocked off for the day as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the young charismatic conductor of Montreal’s popular Orchestre Métropolitain, leads journalists through a tour of the city’s long-awaited new concert house L’Adresse Symphonique, more than halfway complete with an expected opening in the fall.

 

Underground parking is finished, the interior block walls are up, the auditorium roof is complete and waterproofed (an exterior roof is being built), some 300 acoustic pads have been installed to isolate the hall from surrounding street and subway noise, and interior and exterior masonry is underway.

 

The concert hall will replace the adjacent Salle Wilfred Pelletier, opened in 1963, as Montreal’s symphony music hall and will be part of the sprawling Place des Arts complex on downtown’s near east side.

 

Quebec’s SNC-Lavalin heads a five-company consortium known as the Ovation Group on Quebec’s first P3 commission for a cultural building, valued at $259 million. The design contract went to Toronto’s Diamond and Schmitt Architects — responsible for the Canadian Opera Company’s Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts — along with Montreal’s Aedifica.

 

Construction began on the traditional “shoebox” hall in Summer 2009 on a street block wedged on the immediate east of Place des Arts’ property bordering Saint Urbain St.

 

It’s across from the new La Parterre, one of two large public spaces around Place des Arts, which in turn are part of the re-invented sprawling 30-block Quartier des spectacles or arts-entertainment district, parts of which are still under construction. The district incorporates numerous existing theaters and clubs in an area redefined by contemporary streetscapes, parks, and especially lighting.

 

There are many similarities between the Four Seasons and L’Adresse Symphonique. Both have translucent glass exteriors providing almost panoramic views showing off interior lobbies and stairwells.

 

But the Four Seasons has a horseshoe-shape, designed to “bring people together and help understand an opera’s libretto,” project architect Matthew Lalla said.

 

By contrast a symphony hall demands a “warmer lusher” sound. “And those two simple facts determine very different paths.”

 

At 2,100 seats the hall will be smaller than its predecessor, which still will be used for arts functions, but will create intimacy in an entirely wood-enclosed space. North American beech wood has been sourced from Quebec.

 

Obtaining the right cut of wood was a principal challenge. “To get strong acoustic response you need very heavy materials,” Lalla said. But the wood industry is tailored to thinner veneered materials. Here, “it’s very important that the wood be extremely thick or very solidly adhered to masonry or very heavy backup.”

 

Also, beech isn’t too stable.

 

This required a breakthrough in engineering.

 

“There’s very adventurous use of wood and wood manufacturing techniques that didn’t even exist four or five years ago when we were building the opera house,” Lalla said.

 

“That’s one industry that’s come a long way, the extent to which computer milling is being used at a very large scale.”

 

The huge cavity at the hall’s front measuring 16 feet high, 12 metres wide, and four metres deep, will be filled with a visible 100 organ pipes behind which will be 5,000 additional ones.

 

L’Adresse Symphonique will be connected to the rest of Place des Arts through the Grand Foyer, an extension and widening of the existing underground tunnel that connects the complex to Ste-Catherine St. and the city’s Metro transit system.

 

Meanwhile two new public spaces have been added to the grounds immediately around Place des Arts as part of the $120 million upgraded Quartier des spectacles. One is Place des festivals, the other La Parterre. These, along with a pedestrian promenade and upgrade of Ste-Catherine St. — the city’s main downtown commercial thoroughfare — were overseen by local urban design firm Daoust Lestage.

 

The parks will hold tens of thousands for outdoor concerts such as at the summer jazz festival. But what is striking is their futuristic lighting design and Place des festivals’ mammoth high-tech fountain.

 

Partner Rene Daoust said the nine angled 15-metre lighting “megastructures” serve as “urban markers” that form “the walls and the ceilings of the urban theatre.”

 

Canada’s most “interactive” fountain can be choreographed by manipulating water walls with colour.

 

Place des festivals walking surface is finished stylishly with extensive Quebec Standstead granite in gray and black.

 

La Parterre is mainly a grassy park with perimeter design elements.
