REM - Antenne Ouest

Warning: Going on a tangent here... Yabucoa77's July 5th photos also depict the 40's quality pavement laid down in about 2007 if I'm not mistaken, in both directions between St-Charles to Sources and beyond. This roadway surface has stood the test of time and proves that good materials and workmanship yield quality results with minimal repairs.  Yes, I know, at a price...

Motorists along highway 40 in Beaconsfield and Kirkland have had quite a sight lately, seeing the REM project gantry named Anne moving over St. Charles Boulevard.

“It is impressive, because it is the first time that we have used launching gantries in Quebec,” said REM project spokesperson Emmanuelle Rouillard-Moreau.

The gantry has moved over the boulevard, allowing for an interesting view for the “drivers who have passed under the prefabricated segments attached to the beam.

“It is important to remember that this working method is safe and proven,” Rouillard-Moreau told The Suburban. “Road traffic is restored during the day under the segments, once these are attached to the launching gantry, while the works are carried out at night; it is therefore a particularly effective method for limiting the impact on traffic.”

And while the gantry Anne is hard at work on the boulevard, the other gantry for the light rail project “Marie is also installing segments in the Dorval area.”

It’s been a loooong time since I last saw a video that didn’t use some form of stabilization... I need a Gravol! 😂

Thanks for both links, the Suburban piece was refreshingly concise (and accurate).

You're right. :P  Sorry if it is a little too late for a Gravol ... 🤢

The columns are complete and ready for LG-Anne all the way past rue Houde to Safran, I expect all the remaining columns on the West Island branch to be complete by the end of summer. I haven’t seen the schedule past the Construction Holiday, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Anne gets to the first ch. Ste-Marie overpass before taking its winter break (it’s about 1.9 km from the overpass right now.

:chillpill:

REM construction ramps up amid parking and graffiti concerns

Construction of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) is ramping up across Montreal, including the West Island, where two giant launching gantries — dubbed Anne and Marie — are altering the suburban landscape one chunk of elevated concrete at a time.

A massive new span installed over St. Charles Blvd. in Kirkland last week caught the attention of drivers and the local mayor, who called it “an unbelievable sight” — even if some citizens were less impressed.

“Maybe some people think it’s ugly,” said Kirkland Mayor Michel Gibson, a proponent of the 67-kilometre light-rail network and its 26 stations linking downtown Montreal with the suburbs.

It’s not the Arc de Triomphe, but Gibson said he’s bullish on the REM because it will ferry commuters to and from the suburbs.

“It will be good for the economy because it will bring qualified workers to the West Island from other parts of the city,” he said.

The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily shut down construction of the REM, but work gradually resumed on May 11.

The Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, or West Island line, is scheduled to be finished by 2023, but REM spokesperson Emmanuelle Rouillard-Moreau said the impact of construction delays caused by the pandemic are still being analyzed.

“In the West Island area, we are continuing the construction of the elevated structure’s columns,” she said. “We need to build 380 columns for the 14.5 km of the elevated structure. As of today, more than 200 columns have been built.”

Some 4,100 prefabricated segments will be installed by the launching gantries on the Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue line.

“Last week, Anne’s passage over St. Charles Blvd. certainly captured the attention of drivers who have passed under the prefabricated segments attached to the beam,” Rouillard-Moreau said. “It is impressive because it is the first time that we have used launching gantries in Quebec. It is important to remember that this working method is safe and proven.”

Gibson remains hopeful that a parking solution can be found for the Kirkland station. The station has no designated parking, but will have a drop-off zone for buses.

“There is parking at the Rio-Can Centre now, so hopefully some if it will be available to drivers,” he said.

Elsewhere, the park-and-ride option at the Fairview Pointe-Claire station still remains undetermined, but about 700 parking spots will be available at Des Sources station in Pointe-Claire and L’Anse-à-l’Orme in Ste-Anne’s.

Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue Mayor Paola Hawa said 100 to 200 parking spots are planned for the L’Anse-à-l’Orme station. But she is concerned about the number of buses making their way to the station, the western-most stop on the West Island line.

“Our biggest challenge will be with EXO, which is bringing in 60 buses an hour along Chemin Ste-Marie from Vaudreuil onto our tiny two-lane road,” Hawa said. “It averages out to one bus a minute but, obviously, rush hour will be different than other times. We’ve spoken with EXO and adopted a resolution in council saying this makes absolutely no sense. You can’t put that many buses onto a two-lane road.”

Hawa’s other concern is that the REM’s concrete structures are an invitation for graffiti.

“I can’t see how that is not going to be a graffiti magnet,” she said.

“I drove downtown a few days ago along Highway 20 and the amount of graffiti is awful. It’s everywhere, even on the sound barriers. It’s as if it’s 40 years old instead of brand spanking new.”

The Pointe-Claire and L’Anse-à-L’Orme stations will be visible on the Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue line by the end of the year, said Rouillard-Moreau.

“Work for the foundation of these two stations already began this summer and will continue,” she said.
