  1. The less state control businesses, the better. There should be no SAQ. Anyone should be able to start their own liquour store if they want. Businesses create jobs for people. Having the government as a major employer is not the answer.
  2. I don't know if we're wasting electricity, but it does seem that a lot of light is emitted from the Montreal region compared to other metropolitan areas. Look at Toronto on the night map, it has even less light than Montreal. One explanation is that is most of the old City of Toronto (before the 1998 mergers) uses LED street lights that emit a blueish light which uses less energy than the bright orange sodium light. In Montreal, Westmount is the only area I think that uses LED, so that's why the streets look so dark at night there. One of the most beautiful sites is coming over the Champlain Bridge into Montreal at night while a heavy snow storm has just started to come down. The sky is so orange and so beautiful over the city.
  3. I can't wait until these governments get themselves organized and make this a reality. Montreal to New York by high speed train would be wonderful. Montreal to Toronto too. Where in Montreal would such a train station be built, or will the trains simply come into Gare Central, which seems too small for a train station with all the trains that would come there (AMT, Via/Amtrak, TGV). There should be a massive transportation hub for TGV, since trains from New York, Boston, Toronto, Ottawa and Quebec City will all be coming to the hub.
  4. Yes, I've been to Pacific Mall. I was disappointed though. From the outside it looks like a glamorous big Asian mall, but it's really just a massive warehouse type building, which is filled with small box-like stores. Most of the stores sell the same things -jewelry, electronics, candy, fruits, cheap clothes, cheap housewares, more jewelry, more electronics, more cheap clothes - that's most of what they well. I was very disappointed. They didn't have anything I couldn't buy downtown around Spadina and Dundas. It wasn't worth the TTC fare to get up to Markham just to go there. A better mall is the Aberdeen Centre in Richmond. Not only is there more variety, but it could easily be considered one of the most architecturally appealing malls in Canada. http://www.aberdeencentre.com/en/gallery.php http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberdeen_Centre
  5. Richmond B.C is over 60% Chinese. The Tim Hortons there have bilingual menus: English and Mandarin.
  6. That's very true Steve. When you are downtown it feels as if the mountain is right next to the city, but it's actually much farther away then the eye would have to believe. I'm not surprised that Monteal can be seen from NY state. From the top of Mount Royal you can see the Adirondacks. If we can see them, they certainly can see us.
  7. You have to give the Chinese credit, their the most entrepreneurial of all the immigrants. They also built their own strip on mall in Brossard. They aren't afraid to integrate and learn French. They are model immigrants to a society.
  8. That's true. The Expos seemed to have to much bad luck...always stranding men on bases, fire sales, Pirates/Braves/Mets getting their act together late in the season and knocking out of playoff contention. Bad luck.
  9. The NIMBY's just want to keep rents cheap. That tactic only works for so long.
  10. Is this project close to a metro station? If not, it should be. All Metro stations and transit hubs should be surrounded, or within 3 minutes walking distance, by buildings not less than 20 storeys. They should try to maximize the transit hubs as much as possible. Longueuil is a good example.
  11. It's called The 3 Brewers in Toronto tough, which sound too lame. They should have just kept the French name. It sounds more refined.
  12. I'm addicted to Les 3 Brasseurs. Now that they have one on Yonge Street, it's like going to Montreal every week!
  13. 65,000 per year sounds good. What's important is to harness that cultural diversity to attract more immigrants. As a diaspora grows it attracts more people. It's like a self-fulfilling prophesy.
  14. The Expos had a tough existence. When dealing with sports where most of the players are American, it's hard to get them to chose to play in Canada, provided other options (U.$. teams)are not available to them. Especially for sports like basketball where players get large sums in endorsements. The endorsements a player can get by playing with an American team compared to a Canadian team differ alot, except for NHLers, where it's probably the other way around. The Expos never had a chance a surviving - downtown ballpark or not.
  15. There could be two reasons for Vancouver's relenting vis-a-vis Montreal. First, it cost a lot of money to live in Vancouver, it's the most costly city in Canada to live in. Secondly, most of Vancouver's immigrants come from Asia, which has the most robust economy in the world right now. Maybe Asians don't feel the need to come to Vancouver as much. Most of Montreal's immigrants come from countries that are poor or at least with less stronger economies, so they might be looking for a better life in Canada.
  16. That's too bad, I use to hate the Nordiques, but their goal song stook with me. And that TQS theme just made you want to go outside and lace'em up.
  17. The CFL and NFL can coexist. Both the Grey Cup and the Super Bowl receive almost the same amount of viewers (4 million).
  18. That's true, Quebecor might want the Nordiques. The Montreal-Quebec series might be a ploy for that to happen. Major league sports is hard in Canada. Other than Toronto, no other city has been able to sustain it.
  19. I can't wait to government on both sides of the border get their act together with this.
  20. These things happen quickly sometimes. Montreal got overlooked for MLS because they would not pay the overpriced expansion fee (pre-Beckham departure) and then suddenly wanted Montreal (post-Beckham departure and recession). For all we know, TVA Sports might be a ploy by Quebecor to buy a NBA, MLB or NFL team and bring them to Montreal. They won't have the Canadiens or the Senators, so there has to be more behind TVA Sports than just showing the Reds vs. the Astros in French with two guys in a studio.
  21. Montreal could do better than that, especially is if the tickets get linked with the Habs tickets.
  22. NBA is a very expensive ticket. Yes, there are a lot of kids, especially of colour, that play basketball, but they can't afford to go to the games. In order for NBA to work in Montreal, they'd have to do like what is done in Toronto and New York - make the purchase of seasons tickets for the most popular sport conditional on purchasing some of the less popular sport. Some Rangers season tickets get sold with the Knicks ticket; Raptors tickets get sold with the Leafs. As for baseball, I wouldn't want that back. It's a sport that is slowly losing interest among younger people. NFL would work. Some people say NFL in Canada would kill CFL, but I disagree. Both Toronto and Philadelphia have NHL and AHL teams, but the lesser product still survives, because people know there different beast. In England, some cities have Premiership clubs and Division 1 clubs. In Canada, there will be those who will go to CFL only, those who will go to NFL only and those who will go to both. That's very possible.
  23. I always enjoy this view of Montreal. It's even better when you're driving on the Turcot.
  24. Yes definitely send that to the mayor. I wrote a letter to Gerald Tremblay back in 2003, and his office (not him personally) actually wrote me back. They commended me for my ideas to improve the city. I had suggested a series of ideas for Montreal, one of them was a hall of fame for the Canadiens. Funny how 6 years later such a thing came into existence. Maybe they used my idea, or maybe it was just the fact that it was the Canadiens centenary and such a thing was due. Never underestimate the influence of social networks, such as this one. If we're relevant enough to catch Metro's attention, we might just be able to get City Hall's attention too. If we feel strongly about something, we should lobby the city. I'm sure they get TONS to letters critical of their performance, so when they actually get people who write them with smart ideas it's amazing how much they listen.
