But anyone who doubts Bronfman's (good) intentions this time around are completely off-base. Even back with Loria, Bronfman was already a minority owner at the time when Loria purchased the majority share of the partnership... Bronfman was one of the few local owners who tried hard to encourage other owners to put up some cash when Loria made cash calls... when the local owners refused, Loria's share of the partnership increased and the locals were diluted. He may not have had the vision, experience, or cash at the time to make it work in what was a very odd situation. It's too bad the details of the Montreal/Tampa Bay project are not fully public knowledge... maybe one day they'll be released. The Bronfman name is VERY highly respected within MLB. His involvement in this project added a lot of credibility with MLB. MLB's decision most certainly did not have anything to do with any negative perception of Bronfman or anyone in the Montreal group. Suggesting otherwise is incorrect. This had everything to do with other MLB owners not wanting Sternberg having control over two markets "for the price of one", and it would set a precedent that might lead to too many complexities for other smaller markets down the road. From what I know, from a very reliable source, is MLB's decision hit the Rays and the Montreal group like running into a wall at 200km/h. It was unexpected and a complete 180 vs all the discussions they'd had to that point. Some of you will probably laugh this off, but I think the reality is the Montreal side of thing got so far advanced and so "good"... the plan would have been exceptionally great for the Rays, and other owners essentially resented Sternberg for being able to benefit from Montreal after years of collecting revenue sharing from MLB (and being very successful on the field). They won't ever admit it but that's almost certainly a big part of the reason this was turned down. They're forcing Sternberg to figure it out in Tampa Bay. Stephen Brunt said it well... it's like when you send a kid up to his room for punishment and he starts playing with a chemistry set... and while he's up there he splits the atom and you're like "uh-oh". Well, that's kind of what Sternberg did here, he came up with a plan (with the Montreal Group) that would have been very advantageous for him. Ultimately it would have had the additional benefit of returning MLB to Montreal. The idea of split cities is complex and there are many hurdles but they were all overcome or very close to being overcome. I am sure we'll see this down the road in pro sports. So, is baseball dead in Montreal for the next 25 years?

I don't want to project for 25 years... but it certainly took a major step back with MLB's decision. Again, I think the decision had more to do with pressure from other owners on Stuart Sternberg and the Rays vs negativity towards Montreal. I don't know what the future holds, sometimes things change when you lease expect it. Montreal could support MLB full-time in an expansion scenario, likely, however the price tag is enormous and the govt here won't be willing to provide the level of subsidy towards a new stadium that many prospective US cities would (presumably Nashville, Portland, Las Vegas...) so the financial model in Montreal would be more challenging even with deep pockets. Risk / reward is different (not to mention costs in USD and revenue in CAD). The Tampa Bay permanent split-city concept was a pretty good deal for Montreal... you'd get a winning team playing home games from June to the rest of the season... when Montreal is at its best as a destination, at a reasonable "cost" and the possibility of building a ballpark relying less on govt support for the model to work. Almost every team struggles to draw in April/early May so removing those dates from the equation in Montreal was a nice plus. 3 1 Citer Lien vers le commentaire Partager sur d’autres sites

C’est un message populaire. SameGuy Posté(e) 1 octobre 2022 C’est un message populaire. Partager Posté(e) 1 octobre 2022 Have a look at what the Chicago Cubs put together for this final weekend of the season as a thank you to their fans. This is one of the most fantastic drone videos I’ve seen in a long time. [Click on the embedded video to open in a new tab and enjoy the audio as well] Oh, and while we are on the subject, after watching this, nobody will ever be able to convince me that you can’t build a vibrant community around a downtown stadium. Yes, the Cubs have a long history and diehard support, and Wrigley Field is a national heritage landmark, but all of the new development around the stadium is fairly recent; it’s an entertainment district as well as a residential community. https://video.twimg.com/amplify_video/1575852496949596168/vid/1280x720/q0uKZcGyLpMw2A1P.mp4?tag=14 4 1 Citer Lien vers le commentaire Partager sur d’autres sites
Rocco Posté(e) 1 octobre 2022 Partager Posté(e) 1 octobre 2022 Strange, I havent heard about Stephen Bronfman since the Expos deal went down the toilet. Wondering if he's thinking about a new twisted and confused idea to bring back our z'amours? Citer Lien vers le commentaire Partager sur d’autres sites
