  1. frankto is right.. these political/economic discussions have their own thread.. lets stick to the topic on hand which is the 900. We don't need to have this hijacked into another round of endless debates
  2. I don't like historical names being changed in any normal situation. These people were honored by our predecessors, what right do we have to change their wishes..? it should stay Pont Champlain for so many good reasons the least of which is the historical impact Champlain himself had on Quebec/New France. He should be honored in a big grandiose way and it should stay permanent. The bridge by the way looks nice. I would have preferred a light rail link on or under it though especially given the cost we are all paying for it. It should have solar panel/heated roads, LED lit gold plated pillars and maglev rail links built into it LOL...
  3. I totally agree, it's a great organization and one that brings prestige to Montreal. Not many cities in the world have important large UN organizations like this in them. It's something to promote and make highly visible.
  4. Yes I read it. It's not a question of people getting lost, it's a question of us in 2014 changing the named choices of people from our past. The station was named after the square. There's no reason for it to be tied to one organization when it serves the needs of all of them in the vicinity. It's a bit disrespectful. I agree ICAO (along with IATA) can and probably should be honored in some way for it's contribution to both Montreal's aviation sector growth and to their legacy of helping the world fly with globally agreed upon guidelines and standards that keep us all secure and confident when we board a narrow tube and climb to 40,000', but I think there is probably a better way to do it than share and existing name of a metro station. For instance we could create an aviation related sculpture at the entrance to YUL, or nearby, or in Square Victoria where it would also be appropriate. We seem to lack that type of art compared to other cities I've been to and it would draw attention to ICAO and if at YUL it would be present to all people coming or going on planes in and out of Montreal signifying the importance of the city in the aviation world. .. the very people ICAO was ultimately created to serve. Furthermore subway stations remain where they are but companies move and then what? If ICAO eventually moves back up north towards rue Sherbrooke where it originally was then what's to be done with the Metro station tied to an organization many metro stops aways? Rename another and put Square-Victoria back to what it once was? It's potentially a slippery slope.. I just don't want to see many Metro stations in 10-20 years renamed for every company, person or organization we feel needs some minor honor or who can buy that honor.. there are new metro stations coming on line soon with the blue line extension. Many of the new stations at the moment have the same names as those on the green line for no other reason than they have the same cross street.. hopefully they will be renamed before they open to something else honoring people or whatever else in the surrounding area that we haven't already honored yet.
  5. I don't like it when they do this. ICAO isn't the only organization around the Square Victoria Metro station. The World Trade Center is tied to it. Place Victoria & the stock exchange is nearby and the convention center, Cité International & Old Montreal are just down the street from it.. why link it to one specific organization? Same for Berri-UQAM, it was fine as Berri de Montigny and they had to go demote the historical figure to add in a university.. I'd rather the STM just put up a information sign indicating what major places, buildings or organizations are near each metro station and let people browse that for their own information than go changing names of stations. We're too quick to change street names and metro names without fully understanding the impact on the people & businesses in the area (references to it on business cards, advertising, flyers, other signage, billboards etc).. sometimes a small change can become a big expense for some companies when these things have to be altered.. plus in the case of historical references I don't like to see people honored then many years, decades or even centuries later we decided they are no longer worthy and have to share the honor or lose it al together. They were honored for a reason not just for the fun of it. There's enough new things we can name after people, there's no need to think we can simply replace what our predecessors felt was honorable and worthy of a recognition. It makes us look like our need to recognize are somehow more important than those of the past when in fact they aren't. Furthermore how long will it be before this leads to the US trend for everything to be sponsored by a large corporation and end up with corporate named stations.. Station Square-Victoria-OACI --> Station Quebecor-OACI.. you heard it here first.. :-)
  6. Gare de Montreal-Nord by caribb, on Flickr Gare Montreal-Nord.. May 2014.. coming along..
  7. Very nice design.. hope it gets built. It will make the square complete, very modern and dynamic.. good stuff, actually a lot of good projects being announced here lately.

    Pointe-du-Moulin

Well, nicely said. I like the fact you dream. I wish more of us did that, it would make for a more interesting world. That being said though, this structure is a wall of ugly concrete stuck right in front of the city.. with some rust added. I can think of many more worthy buildings (visually) to keep and preserver and transform into the wonderful structure you suggest. If architects can do what you say and pull off a truly amazing space then kudos to them, they'll deserve all the praise an accolades imaginable. I'd love to be proven wrong but honestly I'd still prefer they just tear it down and put up something modern and striking, a signature building(s).. I know we're not super rich but in my dream world imagine a structure like the Marina Bay Sands hotel (Singapore) there overlooking the city.. or even our version of the CN Tower, giving Montrealers & tourists a really gorgeous sweeping view of the downtown core and mountain, maybe good enough to take away the building height restriction imposed on the city.. I was only joking about the useless airports but a downtown airport actually is a useful thing. It could be a showcase for the CSeries and Bombardier here in their hometown and that's a possible location. Porter Airlines or a home made airline could offer flights all over the continent and give Air Canada a run for its money. With trans-Atlantic capability they could even fly to Europe & the Caribbean from there. Something new there could be the city's 375th birthday present to everyone.. I just feel that concrete mess has been there so long and it's never been dealt with after all these decades, it's time to either do something or just get rid of it.

I know structures like this sometimes have architectural significance although I don't know about this one in particular but.. it's God awful ugly. We've blindly torn down some beautiful old mansions, hotels, rail stations etc over the years that had some significant architectural value... can't we just tear this mess down and go "...ooops" and get on with building something new, modern and beautiful in this wonderful location? It never seemed to matter before. Hey, maybe even put a downtown airport like Toronto's there... we're good at building useless airports too.. LOL
  10. One of the nicest projects I've seen in a long time. Hope it gets built.
  11. Some cities street signs are illuminated, that would help at night but admittedly would be expensive. My understanding is black letters on yellow is the most visible colour combination to the human eye. This is why airports tend to use it on their interior signs. I'm not sure how well that would work outside or at night though. Personally I think bigger is better and perhaps adding a second street sign many meters before the intersection so you see in advance what's coming before you actually get to the cross roads would help as well. Too often I have ended up searching for the street names at some intersections and inadvertently holding up traffic.
  12. Something this efficient will never happen in Quebec. They've been working on the first bridge over the 15 going into Laval for months and they seem to have barely made any progress. Installing a bridge over night would be miraculous here. The website where the link video is embedded says had it not been raining this would have taken 4-6 hours... HOURS.... http://www.wired.com/autopia/2013/10/abc/
  13. I agree the name should at least have a reference to the Olympics in some way... or Viau which if anything is closer to the actual stadium
  14. I hope they don't just repeat the station names of Langelier, Pie IX and Viau all over again. There are plenty of historical figures, events, causes and what not to honor that could be used for those stops instead. J'espère qu'ils ne vont pas simplement répéter les noms de les stations de Langelier, Pie IX et Viau. Il ya beaucoup de personnages historiques, des événements, des causes qui pourrait être utilisé pour les noms arrêts au lieu.
  15. As a long time resident of the East End I can't say I've seen much of all this investment. Only the Metro extension for the Olympics and the new bridge to Laval. As you say everything else is degrading. Rue Sherbrooke has endless potholes. The Lafontaine tunnel is anything but a joy to drive through although it at least works. The Olympic Stadium sits with a roof that doesn't work. Pie IX is a mess right now with construction at Henri Bourassa. I don't want the bus lanes back to be honest. Pie IX and other streets (eg Rachel) seem to be for everything but cars.. bike lanes, parked cars, taxi lanes, bus lanes, turning lanes, right and left arrow lights, school buses with frequent stops, gees in the end there's really only one lane for the cars. The buses will only make it more congested. I've given up and gone back to the 40 and 15 everyday to Laval. Notre Dame is still a congested mess at rush hour thanks in part to the railroad bridge they never widened. Rosemont has been under construction all summer. Driving is aggravating out here, if I don't ruin my wheel alignment swerving around broken roads then I'm stuck in gridlock. Yeah, the metro extension to Les Galeries d'Anjou would be welcomed but I'd also like to see it extended to the West Island too as well as a line from Pie IX into Laval which might help me. I'm for trying something different too.. maybe trams (like most European cities) or cable cars (like Barcelona & New York) or a monorail across the river (under the New Champlain bridge?) or even a high speed ferry from both east and west island to down town.. one that runs every 10 or 15 minutes at rush hour. We live on an island, hey it's developed and hard to reconfigure.. we should give everything a shot to give us all some relief.
  16. I've always hated that statement, it's so 1940s.. times change.
  17. I don't hate it but it looks like something from the 1980s.
  18. Laval ahead of Montreal... get real. This poll is a farce. Montreal offers much more than most of those cities listed in the top 10.. if not more than all of them.
  19. Monsieur Lazhar was one of the best films I saw in 2011! So good to see it nominated for an Oscar. It's well deserved.

Maybe this video on why 2012 isn't the end of the world was posted earlier if so sorry but it's hilarious and worth a review / Peut-être que cela a été publié plus tôt si si désolé, mais c'est hilarant et mérite un examen (not YouTube, sorry) http://gizmodo.com/5872896/the-complete-video-guide-to-2012-end-of-the-world-imbecility
