Comedyworks abruptly goes out of business

The Comedyworks, a fixture on Montreal's comedy scene for nearly a quarter of a century, abruptly shut its doors for good Friday.

The owner of the Bishop St. establishment suggests the club — and its adjoining bar, Jimbo's — had been losing money for years, in part because of a lack of parking in the downtown core.

"The problem is not comedy competition as much as the lack of parking for customers," CJAD contributor Bill Brownstein told Aaron Rand Friday. "They weren't getting the customers coming in from out of island because of too many condos, not enough parking."

In the last two years, a large parking lot across the street was replaced with a condo building.

The Comedyworks, with its brick wall backdrop and dozens of photos of comics lining its walls, was well known for its charm and intimacy. It had been a launching pad for hundreds of local comics in the 24 years it had been in business. It also hosted a popular open mic night on Mondays, and served as home base for the On The Spot improv troupe.

The solution is clearly not to have more parking. Bars open and close because tastes change and neighborhoods evolve. The increasingly residential density will bring more permanent stability to the downtown area in the long term, even if there is a transitional period where people's travel habits have to adapt. All this means is that we need better transit links within the downtown core to attract a larger demographic to businesses. Traffic isn't going to get any better so more parking won't help.

I don't understand why they don't try to relocate if the main problem is parking. Maybe they could find something near Atwater and St-Antoine where parking is easier especially if cars can still park Under the highway. Or further South on Notre-Dame where they can use the parking of the SAQ/Pharmacy/Super C.

I agree totally. Just go to downtown Manhattan on any given night: they don't have blocks and blocks of parking and their business are very successful. People take subways, taxis and everyone gets to where they are going without huge parking lots.

You are also right about the cyclical nature of bars and restaurants - they open, they thrive and then they close. That's the way it goes. I worked in bars and restaurants in the eighties from St Paul to Bishop Street and NONE of those clubs still exist today. It's normal and should not be blamed on development.
