The media always play up the bad experiences. Considering the huge number of Canadians who travel to Mexico every year, there are very few incidents- probably no more than there are in the U.S. or many other countries. That said, the only 2 Mexican cities that I've been to are Tijuana and Nuevo Laredo. Both are shithole border cities and you have to be very careful, especially at night. A lot of fun though- if you take the proper precautions and don't act like a complete idiot.

 

Colombia is another country that receives a lot of stereotypical bad press. An Aussie friend of mine has been living in Bogota for 7 years now and says that it's a beautiful city, completely unlike what the media would lead you to believe
