MONTREAL - A video uploaded to YouTube this week showing sidewalk plows moving through a neighbourhood with blades down and no snow on the ground is generating some controversy in Montreal.

 

The video, uploaded on Dec. 22, shows the plow blades clearly scraping along the dry sidewalk, apparently causing damage as they go. The time stamp indicates the images were captured on Dec. 21 just before 8 a.m. in the Villeray neighbourhood, in the northeast end of the city.

 

Montreal received a significant amount of freezing rain that afternoon and evening, but it is not clear why the plows were out several hours before the storm began. Calls to the city were not immediately returned, but a borough employee reportedly told French news channel LCN that the workers were dispersing salt and gravel in anticipation of the freezing rain.

 

The video had received more than 31,000 views as of 11 a.m. Saturday. Many outraged citizens left comments on the site, questioning if municipal employees were wasting time and taxpayers' money.
