Voici la présentation de ce qui a été présenté à la conférence des ''Grands projets'' cette semaine au Palais des congrès concernant le CUSM. Il n'y a rien de bien nouveau pour nous.

Relaxing, healing green space vital part of project

By MONIQUE MUISE, The Gazette May 17, 2011

The concept of healing through nature is not new. Even the earliest hospitals and health-care centres were equipped with gardens, and doctors quickly recognized the powerful and positive impact that Mother Nature could have on their patients.

Medical technology has evolved dramatically over the centuries, but green space remains an integral part of most hospitals. The McGill University Health Centre's new Glen campus will be no different, said Robert Hamilton, senior director of the MUHC Glen Campus development.

"We're planning to really raise our game in this sense," he said. "There's a dimension of public space to this campus that will really add to the experience for the people who visit, use the services or work there."

The biggest green space will be an expansive landscaped area in the northwest corner of the 42-acre site, in front of the main entrances to the adult and children's hospitals, Hamilton said.

The park will lie directly overtop the underground parking facility, and will include pathways, areas for relaxing, trees and other plants.

"In the centre of this large landscaped area, there's a focal space with seating and plants and other landscaped features," Hamilton explained. "Adjacent to that, the design architects have proposed elements that would be reminiscent of the old Décarie house or the historic origins of the rail activity on the site."

Within the hospital buildings themselves, there will be large, light-filled atriums in each of the pavilions, and each atrium will open onto a smaller-scale green space on the south side of the buildings. No two gardens will look the same, Hamilton said, and the MUHC has already begun working with landscape architects to make decisions regarding elements and plants to be included.

Finally, a large healing garden will be installed next to the cancer centre, and will be accessible to all patients, staff and visitors.

"Patients receiving treatment in the cancer centre will face all the challenges that go with that type of treatment," he said. "The technology and the services at the hospital will be the best available, but the proximity to a healing garden where patients can wander, relax and spend time with loved ones is a means to reduce the stress."

The green spaces will be some of the last elements to be installed on the Glen, and the hospital's construction consortium will be responsible for setting them up and maintaining them over the next 30 years.
