MTLskyline Posté(e) 31 janvier 2011 Partager Posté(e) 31 janvier 2011 I just wrote to Mr. Aubin the following: Mr. Aubin, I read your article titled "How High is Too High?" and I agree with your premise that Montreal lacks a cohesive development strategy or vision. However, I must disagree with you and correct you on a few matters regarding building heights. The Marriott Courtyard project on Anderson/René-Lévesque will indeed have 40 floors, but the building itself will be much shorter than Complexe Desjardins, not taller. This is because residential floor heights (2.7m-3.5m) tend to be much shorter than office ones (3.5m-5m). Secondly, if you consider 30 storey buildings to be "jumbo", I highly urge you to explore central business districts around the world. Montreal is incredibly timid when it comes to development. If we consider a 30 floor building to be tall, it's only because we've gotten used to lackluster economic growth in recent decades. We need to build at the highest possible density in the downtown core to maximize the benefit of expensive infrastructure and liven the streets with people. Finally, I'd like to point out that the 37-floor Hilton situated at 400 Sherbrooke is barely 120m tall. That's 60% of the height of Montreal's tallest building, 1000 de la Gauchetière. Recent construction projects will barely put a dent in Montreal's skyline and everything must be taken in context. The fact is Montreal has barely seen high-rise development over the last two decades, and frankly it's about time we get some. Fourty floors is not too tall... it's not tall enough! Great! You should also send it to the editor and get it printed in the paper! Unfortunately there are a lot of people who believe everything they read. By having your letter printed, people will be exposed to another opinion, and some may even re-consider their opinions on the issue.
