Hotel puts accent on silence

Hopes to make splash in niche market

From the 11th-floor swimming pool of the Hilton Garden Inn on Sherbrooke St. with its panoramic views of the city, Louis Secondo can see three other hotels under construction.

The Westin is being built in the former Gazette building, the Viger Square Hotel is going in the former CPR train station in Old Montreal and a Marriott hotel is about to go up at Cathcart and University Sts.

But Secondo, the general manager of Montreal's newest hotel that opens today, isn't worried about the competition.

Secondo says the Hilton Garden Inn, like Hôtel Crystal, which opened on René Lévesque Blvd. in March, is designed to serve its own niche market.

"We're selling a new comfort level to the mid-range corporate market," Secondo said. "The Crystal is high end. Our competition will be the older chain hotels built along Sherbrooke St. in the 1960s.

"There's no steel in our building; it's all concrete for sound insulation. Our rooms really are soundproof. They're not like the Gyproc on Gyproc construction of 40 or 50 years ago. We're in a good location, close to the Place des Festivals. We're the newest hotel on the block."

In addition to its 221 rooms, the Hilton Garden Inn will have rental apartments in a 25-floor tower above the hotel that will open next summer.

"There are other full service condominium hotel complexes," said Secondo, a native Montrealer who managed the Courtyard Hotel next door for seven years before moving to the Hilton Garden Inn.

"I think we are the the first hotel with rental units above it. Tenants in the building who rent will be able to share our pool, underground parking and some of our facilities."

Designed by Éric Huot for Canvar Group, the $65-million project features black and beige granite floors, a 60-seat continental restaurant, a gymnasium and 11th floor swimming pool. It even has a 24-seat private cinema.
