800 mil - 1 billion???

 

The Bay Bridge is San Fransisco is passing 7 billion and its shorter.

 

What??? Are you sure about that? What the hell are they doing out there?

 

the latest estimates for a new Champlain bridge were at about 1 billion$ and that was last year.

Port Mann bridge in Surrey BC has an estimate of 3 billion and its 1/3 the length.

 

The Premier unveiled plans on February 4, 2009 to replace the bridge with a new 10-lane bridge; the bridge will be tolled approximately $3 each way. The estimated cost of construction is $2.46 billion. The total cost including operation and maintenance is expected to be $3.3 billion. When the new bridge is completed, the existing bridge, which will be more than 45 years old, will be taken down. [9]

 

The project was intended to be funded by using the Public-private partnership funding format, and Connect B.C. Development Group was chosen as the preferred developer. The Connect B.C. Group includes the Macquarie Group, Transtoll Inc., Peter Kiewit Sons Co. and Flatiron Constructors. [10] Although a memorandum of understanding had been signed by the Province, final terms could not be agreed. Consequently, the Province will be funding the entire cost of replacement.

 

A number of groups have lobbied to improve mass transit rather than build a new bridge. Opponents to the expansion include the Municpality of Burnaby,[12] some urban planners,[13], and the Sightline Institute[14].

Opponents argue that increasing the highway capacity will only relieve congestion for a few years before increased traffic congests the area again,[15] and would encourage suburban sprawl. The Livable Region Coalition has urged the Minister of Transportation, Kevin Falcon, to consider rapid transit lines and improved bus routes instead of building the new bridge.[16]

The David Suzuki Foundation claims the plan violates the goals of Metro Vancouver's Livable Region Strategic Plan.[17]

Pour revenir au sujet, le Pont Champlain n'as pas a être aussi haut sur une aussi longue distance pour laisser passer les navires comme ceux de san francisco et vancouver.

Let's not forget that 65% to 70% (the Montreal side)of the Champlain Bridge is just a glorified overpass! It shouldn't cost too much!
