KAHNAWAKE TRAIN STATION BACK ON TRACK

11/17/2015

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that a project to have a commuter train stop built at the Adirondack Junction has been reintroduced.

The project had originally been brought forth in 2009, at which time a survey was conducted that indicated support for such a project. However, it was not deemed a high enough priority and the project fell to the wayside.

“With the continuing works on the Mercier Bridge and other major infrastructure projects in the corridor between Kahnawà:ke and Montreal, traffic is going to only get worse for the next few years,” said Chief Carl Horn. “It’s time for our people to take advantage of the commuter train that already passes through our community.”

Chief & Council are unanimous is their support to reintroduce the project. Preliminary work will get underway shortly, including creating a new survey to gauge community support for such a project. Meetings with the various agencies involved are also in the works. Chief Rhonda Kirby (Intergovernmental and Transport portfolios) and Community Infrastructure Portfolio Chief Arlene Jacobs will also be involved in the project.

“The train is a direct link to the city, with connections to Metro stations and the new Montreal hospital,” Chief Horn concluded. “The line ends at the Bell Center. You can’t get any more downtown than that.”

MCK LAUNCHES SURVEY TO GAUGE SUPPORT FOR TRAIN STATION IN KAHNAWAKE

12/09/2015

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is informing the community that a survey has been launched as part of a project being proposed to have a commuter train stop built and operated at Adirondack Junction.

The survey consists of seven (7) questions and should take only a few moments to complete. It will be made available on-line at http://www.kahnawake.com/train until the end of this month. Afterward, the results will be tabulated and the results will be made available.

Additionally, Chief Carl Horn, who has been an advocate of the station project, will be hosting a kiosk this week at the Services Complex at which Kahnawa’kehró:non will be invited to participate in the survey.

Train Stop Survey results released

For Immediate Release

(Kahnawake – 14, Tsothohrkó:wa/January 2016) The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that the results of the survey to gauge public opinion on a project being proposed to have a commuter train stop built and operated at Adirondack Junction is now available for viewing at http://www.kahnawake.com. The seven question survey was launched online on December 9, 2015 and closed on December 31st. There were 201 respondents.

Of note, the survey shows that close to 400 people minimum would use the stop at least once per week as long as it had ample Parking for Park & Ride and basic security features, such as lighting or cameras and a small shelter for rain/snow. 57% wanted a bus service and that figure was consistent with both Kahnawà:ke respondents and those who live outside of Kahnawà:ke. The vast majority of outside responses lived in Chateauguay.

The survey is not technical and has no accuracy percentage. Promotion of the survey was strictly in Kahnawà:ke, but given that 24% of respondents live outside of Kahnawà:ke, leads us to believe that even more people from outside of Kahnawà:ke, especially Chateauguay, would likely use the train stop if a similar survey took place there.

On average, each participant in the survey represented 2 persons in their household that would use the stop if one were built. On average, one person in each household would use the stop for work with the other using it for school.

Those from outside of Kahnawà:ke would mostly use the stop for work (67%) while most of those from Kahnawà:ke would use it for leisure or school. This statistic makes sense given how many people from Chateauguay work on the island of Montreal while a large majority of Kahnawa'kehró:non work in Kahnawà:ke, but both CEGEP & University students in both areas attend schools in Montreal.

It’s very encouraging to see that our people are fully in support of the project,” said Chief Carl Horn. “I want to make life easier for our people, especially our youth that are in school.”

Relativement encourageant.

A commuter train station is one stop closer to becoming a reality. The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake and the Agence Metropolitaine des Transport, which is the regional public transportation authority, are working on a pilot project that would see a commuter train station built at the Adirondack Junction.

Mohawk Council of Kahnawake Chief Carl Horn, who has been working on this project for some time, says he is hopeful it will be operational in time for the new school year.

Fanie Clement St-Pierre, a communications officer with the AMT, said that the pilot project is very close to becoming a reality. She said that some of the details are being finalized and the AMT and the MCK will be meeting again in the next week or so. "There are some details that have to be worked out", Horn told Iorì:wase." AMT reps conducted some site visits and identified the Adirondack Junction area as the best suitable location." Horn said the train station would include a small building, with lighting and security cameras, as well as adequate parking for approximately 150 vehicles. Horn said they are looking at this as a one-year pilot project. "The cost for the first year is very minimal as it is identified as a pilot project", Horn said.

But AMT, CP Rail and our Tech Services will share in the construction costs. We have a year to work out some of the financial details to make sure our station stays here long term for our community. Horn explained that the Tech Services will construct the train station with the assistance of, and materials provided by, AMT. CP will also be involved in the construction.

Horn has been working on this project for some time and is happy to see it moving forward. "I've worked hard on this project for about a year and I was very determined to make this happen for our people, Horn explained. My job is to make life easier for our community and with the cost of travel and traffic woes forthcoming, our people need an easier way to the city, especially our young students." The Kahnnawake train station would be on the Candiac line and would have stops in LaSalle, Montreal West, Vendome and at Lucien-L'Allier.

Commuter train would be feasible option

Patricia Blackburn  Translation Dan Rosenburg

Ferry boat, hovercraft, and a cable-car system are a few options that have been evaluated by the provincial government to diversify the offering of public transport in the Chateauguay region, discloses riding MNA Pierre Moreau. But, following analysis, « the most feasible option remains that of the commuter train, » he says.

Actually, the people of the region have few alternatives, aside from buses and cars, both of which submit themselves to hazards of the road and the Mercier Bridge. According to Moreau, Chateauguay`s geographical aspect would play in its disfavour. « All the options studied were not attainable, notably because of the depth of the river (to cross) in the sector or the clearing necessary to build a cable-car system,`` he explained.
The commuter train, however, remains the most promising option, Moreau considers. ``We should continue to rely on this possibility,`` he says. ``It consists of an extremely efficient transport system which is not expensive to manage.  This is because the train already passes through Kahnawake, and it would be sufficient to construct a boarding quai and a parking lot as an incentive. In addition, I think that the people of Kahnawake would be open to that,`` he let it be known. He admits, however, that he does not know where discussions stand in this matter. Discussions would be held, according to him, by a coming together of the main actors in the transportation file (Mobility Montreal).
