Excavation begins for MUHC superhospital Excavation began today at the Glen Yard, next to Vendome train station, on the MUHC superhospital (June 17, 2010) Heavy equipment began digging into the Glen Yards on Thursday morning, in what is expected to be a six-month process of excavation for the MUHC superhospital. The first part of the 500 single-patient room medical facility is expected to open in 2014, and cost approximately $1.34 billion. Dr. Arthur Porter has spent years shepherding the superhospital through the planning stages, and the CEO is happy construction has finally begun. "First we're actually going to dig down, create the structure that will in fact be the parking decks of the institution," said Porter. "The most important thing is that the entire hospital will all be built at once, and will be delivered at once in 2014." Getting to point where crews are actually starting work has taken more than 12 years. Earlier this year the provincial government announced that a consortium led by SNC-Lavalin and Innisfree Ltd. will build the 300,000 square metre project. Once completed, there will be space to treat 346 adults in individual rooms, and a children's hospital with capacity for 154 patients. The superhospital is being built with increased efficiency in mind, and most patients will be able to get the bulk of their testing and treatment in their rooms, instead of having to be transferred from ward to ward. On Tuesday, the site for the residential project known as "Le Seville" will be inaugurated, and many hope it will help revitalize the area. Walter Massey remembers when the neighbourhood now known as Shaughnessy Village was the place to be. "It was vaudeville and you know you get the roll down scenery," said Massey. "Variety shows coming in there, all kinds of stars." The neighbourhood's decline began in the 1980s when the Seville Theatre closed. When the Canadiens left the Forum to play in the Bell Centre, the decay continued, and the Seville was left to rot. "Really what comes to mind is the sadness of how we can let Montreal decay," said Dinu Bumbaru of Heritage Montreal. But now, after multiple plans to revatilize the area, something will finally be done. A residental highrise will be constructed on Ste. Catherine between Lambert-Closse and Chomedey, with work beginning next week. Louise Yard lives in the area, and hopes some of the old architecture is preserved. "To keep some kind of character, that would be wonderful," Yard said. Bumbaru couldn't agree more, and hopes the site isn't just bulldozed, but rather deconstructed. "You send crews that dismantle the elements that can be salvaged," proposed Bumbaru. "Whether the steel, the brick, the concrete." For Massey, the Seville is more than just a building. "It resurrects the old feeling of the Seville for me, because it will be home of a different kind but it will still be back home," said Massey.

Oh man, I think this is a brilliant idea! Imagine having an office tower with the world-famous NFB logo right in the Quartier des Spectacles? I'd even be happy with a 15-20 story tower in that case!

Well, I kinda like it. I think the two-lane understanding is the merge from the 20 into the Ville-Marie? That stretch of highway (the eastbound direction) has four lanes, which breaks off to the 20 east (one lane), Decarie northbound (one lane) and two that go straight and create the Ville-Marie, along with the one lane merges of the 15 south and 20 westbound, right? So, instead of two lanes, it'll be one WITH a lane for public transit, which I believe is fantastic. Don't wanna get caught in traffic? Take public transit! They said they wanted to reduce the 300,000 vehicles that take the interchange everyday, so this makes sense. Cool design too.

The tunnel linking Guy-Concordia metro station with the Hall and Library building looks like it will be open by mid-April at the latest; and might I say, it looks beautiful lol If only the rest of the station could look as beautiful and modern as the tunnel *sigh* Also, as Kotar said a few weeks ago: the new Centre for Structural and Functional Genomics began construction last week at the Loyola campus, and should be complete by March 2011. It'll cost $30 million (according to the Concordia University Journal), which has been allocated by the Knowledge Infrastructure Program.

Kotar pretty much said it all. It seems the major parts of construction began in late May, early June 2009 and by the time they slowed down construction in December, the first overpass for Bouchard Avenue was complete, with many of the cement pillars already in place for the next set of overpasses. As Malek said, a lot of the area is just massive piles of dirt lol It's really incredible how high they reach, considering the area isn't that big. And Thanks for the welcome! If you haven't been to the area in a while, it is certainly worth a look!
