  1. There’s a big difference between making compromises to get the best possible project within budgetary and logistical constraints, and handing over all planning, decision-making, and management of public infrastructure to a for-profit enterprise. I don’t know of any other major city on Earth where this has been allowed to happen. Elsewhere that private or para-public enterprises are involved in public infrastructure, these corporations do not have the seemingly unassailable power that CDPQi has here. Transit authorities mandate what is required in a project, private enterprises bid for contracts. None of this take-it-or-leave-it horse-hockey.
  2. You’ve just explained why it’s basically a terrible proposal, and not in the public interest or benefit.
  3. Perfecto. If the system would link up properly with the Métro in the east, where it would still be a “train,” this would be a moot point. Without any studies showing otherwise, they seem to be hung up on the belief that the vast majority of users are only interested in using it as a downtown express commuter train, so speed to get to Robert-Bourassa is of primordial importance. Instead, they’ve chosen a route with very poor interconnection to the Métro, making it much less useful as a transit system component, and more of an isolated commuter train line (using mini-tram equipment). With proper linkage to the Métro, that 2.8 km at ground level wouldn’t significantly slow the travels of the vast majority of users.
  4. This. Check the stock price of Caterpillar and other construction-related businesses. Insanity. Meanwhile, the home-reno centres in Australia (Bunnings, Mitre-10) are drive-through-self-service and take up much less space than HD/Rona/Reno here.
  5. The best looking new building in Montreal is a bus jail. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Agree with every point here. We can’t just accept a binary choice between anything (an extremely compromised project) and nothing at all (collapsing buildings! Untold subterranean horrors!). There is a much better project on drawing boards somewhere, that serves more of the population and links up better with existing transit. But apparently beggars can’t be choosers.
  7. You owe me a phone. I spat beer on mine! 😂

Lol. I am more intrigued by the “provide an opportunity to create new living environments in the neighbourhoods served.” Sure, it’s marketing speak, but I truly can’t decipher it.
  9. Thanks for pointing it out. I really didn’t see the bucket!
  10. How many decades until the rest of Centre-Sud/Ste-Marie/M’lasse/Ondes/Molson is revitalized (read: sterilized and gentrified)?
  11. Rust?? Terrific shot, btw!
  12. What a great view, and one I was really waiting for someone to snap! Thanks!
  13. I laughed out loud at this imaginary exchange, but there’s a big reason why @Rocco has 15k+ “likes,” and would likely have perhaps 5k more if it weren’t for the old system where downvotes deducted from upvotes: he’s a big part of the vitality and quality of this place, and I’m constantly awed by his love for this metropolis, even if I don’t always agree with his opinions.
  14. It’s interesting to live out here and see how this segment changes (gradually) on a day to day basis.
  15. I don’t disagree at all. But it’s a cost-to-benefit ratio. Insulated, clad walls with smaller windows probably cost less than half the typical floor-to-ceiling glass type condo cladding, and likely even less than that, compared to the type of glazing needed for adequate thermal and acoustic performance in a large-size window.
  16. Yes, it’s an offset pillar caused by the turning/merge lane from the exit of the service road to eastbound Chemin Ste-Marie.
  17. Hopefully no boaters choosing to ignore the nav warnings for this section!
  18. Maybe floor-to-ceiling and won’t be delivered for a while? Not sure. Interesting observation though!
  19. The funny thing is that if it were being erected south of St-Jacques or west of Lucien-L’Allier, we wouldn’t even be slinging mud at it. But because of its proximity to the Quad, 900, and the Brocco Bunch, the renderings throw us all sorts of red flags. It’s an apartment building designed designed to help families live close to downtown. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  20. Scrapers on the pantographs, too
  21. I would think any new acquisitions will only come after a hard launch of the Sir John project. No sales = no credit. I’m willing to bet, as good as their rating may be, they don’t wish to extend further.
  22. NY is rarely below freezing for long periods. It’s not the snow that’s an issue with third rails, it’s ice buildup. If the temperatures stay below freezing long enough, equipment can super-cool, and humidity freezes quickly on surfaces; the weight of the train takes care of the running rails, but ice on the third rail can interrupt the circuit, as TTC learned with the Scarborough RT in the 80s:
