Une plaque de rue, c'est pas pour faire cute, c'est utilitaire.

Ca se doit d'être clair, placé à un endroit bien en vue, et assez gros pour qu'en roulant à la vitesse permise, on soit capable de la lire.

How about these integrated sign gantries and traffic lights, as in downtown Edmonton:

And check out the advance notification sign of 101 St... that said it looks boring and could be confusing as it looks just like a regular sign... perhaps a different colour scheme is needed or "250m" distance added...

Personally, I think street signs should be huge at major intersections. I don't think these, despite their good visibility, are quite big enough.

I like the old ones, especially the occasional one marked "STREET" or "ST." (most have tape over it...) It brings colour and diversity and they are still legible... though if the sign is not readable and badly degraded then it should be replaced.

I don't know why many people love the new big panels with upper case letters. I really prefer to lower case letters, such as the 80's version of Montreal's street panels (with its red logo on the left side). If it's only a question of driver's visibility, the 80's panels are visible and clear enough to me, plus, Montreal is "still using" this format for newer home projects that need road development. So I don't know what is the real idea behind those giant "Godzilla" big caps panels that looks more like a business advertisement than anything else. We should only replace those stupid 1950's rusted panels with those "80's" ones (on the pic below) which still look great I think.
