Tu as tellement raison!

We cannot be like ISIS and start destroying parts of our history that we don`t like. Lafontaine had a view of federalism that prevailed at that time and his thinking played a major role in the development of Quebec and Canada. Agree with it or not, federalism remains a mainstay of our political life today. We have a major opportunity here to create a living museum on political thought; the lessons from federalism; its strengths and weaknesses. What a waste it would be to turn it into condos.

Agree 100%. But it won't be destroyed. It will be revamped. I don't know where that comes from, but there should be no worry at all.

I would be happy if they preserve the house in any forms. But doing a museum with that house won't be substainable.

If they are doing condos with it that's fine. Maybe the other option is doing a consulate house. At least it's related in some aspect with the history of that house.

It is not that we don't like that history, it is that we don't care enough about history (and we don't have money).

I agree that we may not care enough about history, but it cares about us. It is our history that gives us the freedom to freely express our views here. It is our history that defines our beliefs, our clothing, our cuisine, and our architecture. We are not the ones who created the present, nor our city. Our city has been bequeathed to us, and each of us has but a short time to we have a positive or negative impact on it and to decide what we want to bequeath to others. . Those who didn`t care about history tore down the original walls of our city; they tore down the Van Horne Mansion; they engaged in massive slum clearances that created countless parking lots throughout the core city.

Maybe they did this because they thought that none of these historical treasures were `sustainable`. The tourists who come here from around the world don’t come here to see the PVM, or our shopping malls, or the monotonous suburbs, or the cereal box skyscrapers. They come because of Le Vieux, because of our art galleries, our museums, our `living’ history. For those of us who live here, we are sustained by all of this on a daily basis.

Consciously or unconsciously, our history is a huge part of our sustainability. It is no coincidence that we have chosen the motto `je me souviens`. It is no coincidence that history is constantly being rewritten. . It is done so in order to influence us today, consciously or unconsciously.

The Lafontaine House is a unique occasion to explore ad understand our history better, to care more about our history and to sustain our future with greater awareness and honesty.
