McGill University unveils a handsome new hospital; Architects' long awaited mock-up looks a lot better than expected

 

 

Well, maybe not. The $1.3-billion hospital's final design, which the MUHC made public last week, might not be up to the standards of Safdie, designer of Ottawa's spire-like National Gallery and other glories, but it is nonetheless surprisingly impressive.

 

The hospital's clean horizontal lines make the project far from the eyesore that many had feared on the basis of an earlier mock-up in 2002. Patients will appreciate the abundance of windows facing the sun. The hospital grounds are also attractively spacious.

Vrai que la forme géométrique de l'hôpital est vraiment intéressante. La forme de la structure reçoit mon appuis.

 

Par contre, pour le look, moi même j'aurais plus faire mieux et pas avec photoshop, avec Microsoft Paint.

Excavation begins for MUHC superhospital

Excavation began today at the Glen Yard, next to Vendome train station, on the MUHC superhospital (June 17, 2010)

 

 

 

 

 

Heavy equipment began digging into the Glen Yards on Thursday morning, in what is expected to be a six-month process of excavation for the MUHC superhospital.

 

The first part of the 500 single-patient room medical facility is expected to open in 2014, and cost approximately $1.34 billion.

Dr. Arthur Porter has spent years shepherding the superhospital through the planning stages, and the CEO is happy construction has finally begun.

 

"First we're actually going to dig down, create the structure that will in fact be the parking decks of the institution," said Porter. "The most important thing is that the entire hospital will all be built at once, and will be delivered at once in 2014."

 

Getting to point where crews are actually starting work has taken more than 12 years.

 

Earlier this year the provincial government announced that a consortium led by SNC-Lavalin and Innisfree Ltd. will build the 300,000 square metre project.

 

Once completed, there will be space to treat 346 adults in individual rooms, and a children's hospital with capacity for 154 patients.

 

The superhospital is being built with increased efficiency in mind, and most patients will be able to get the bulk of their testing and treatment in their rooms, instead of having to be transferred from ward to ward.

 

The land will also be extensively landscaped, with a park and pond built on the site.

Je vous conseille d'attendre début juillet, car rien n'est encorefinalisé. Les travaux font prabablement parti d'entente pour la préparation du site.

L'architecture est "OK", je dirais 6/10 ou 7/10.

Tu sais, la qualité d'un hôpital ce n'est pas QUE l'apparence extérieure...

Tu sais, la qualité d'un hôpital ce n'est pas QUE l'apparence extérieure... Un jour je vous montrerai peut être les plans originaux que les architectes avaient en tête avant qu'ils ne réduisent les superficies pour atteindre le budget. C'était ça où bien coupé sur le nombre de lit... disons que c'était assez facile à trancher.

 

Et j'imagine que ces plans originaux étaient tout à fait fantastiques mais vu que on ne peut rien se payer de qualité ici, on scrap le design pour quelque chose d'horriblement années 60 laid pour sauver de l'argent pour bien payer Tony Tomassi, le boss de la FTQ et les piscines olympiques dans les prisons.
