  1. Its not that they won`t pay for them; they can`t pay for them. The canal was built because of the produce that was the result of blue caller labour; very often exploited labour. In fact, an argument can be made that it should, in its now increasingly beautiful state, be given back to the workers. They built it; they nourished it and then all their jobs disappeared and the canal became a deserted trash receptacle. Now that same canal is becoming a playground for the well-off. It should be accessible for all Montrealers; not just the rich.
  2. Cynics always believe that they are realists. In fact, in my experience, it is the cynics`negative view of human nature which is unrealistic and downright naïve. Perhaps, it is because often they have been damaged themselves and project this on to all human affairs. Of course, by being cynical they themselves do damage, and only hinder the slow, but steady progress of the human journey.
  3. The new design might help. They are in a very competitive situation now. Maybe the staid designs will not work for downtown-style living, especially with some of the more exciting choices now available.
  4. They should build an urban garden on the roof of the Bell Centre. It would feed half of the neighbourhood.
  5. That whole empty stretch, in fact the old Dorchester Blvd itself, was the result of Drapeau`s slum clearance programme (Urban renewal was not in mode then). It has been barren for 50 years. The Overdale clearance came later and was tied to a proposed building by some Toronto promoter, which never materialized.
  6. Canvar has said all along that a McGill residence was one of their options. It sounds as if it will be either condos or, more fittingly for Canvar, rentals.
  7. The demolitions in the 50`s were old-style urban renovation; known at the time by all as slum clearance. It has taken over half a century to begin to see the disappearance of the resulting scar in the heart of the city.
  8. Comparing Toronto or Vancouver with Montreal regarding their respective skylines is comparing apples and oranges. Vancouver is hemmed in in front and in back, and has no where to go except up. Toronto, with its lake front, has half of the space available to Montreal and must go up, at a higher cost. In theory, all things being equal, a building next to the city hall in Toronto should be twice as expensive as on a comparable site in Montreal. So, it makes sense for them to go upwards. Montreal has a height ceiling based on historical and aesthetic reasons. We don't want to hide Mont Royal. Good idea. Here, we can and should concentrate on the quality of each and every high-rise, rather than on its height. We can give the phallic gold medal to Toronto without feeling bad about it.
  9. Is this going to turn into a corner of Toronto or Minneapolis? Where is the local flavour?
  10. It was George Bernard Shaw and he didn`t say liberal; he said socialist; plus it was satirical, since he reamined socialist all his adult life.
