Comparing Toronto or Vancouver with Montreal regarding their respective skylines is comparing apples and oranges. Vancouver is hemmed in in front and in back, and has no where to go except up. Toronto, with its lake front, has half of the space available to Montreal and must go up, at a higher cost. In theory, all things being equal, a building next to the city hall in Toronto should be twice as expensive as on a comparable site in Montreal. So, it makes sense for them to go upwards. Montreal has a height ceiling based on historical and aesthetic reasons. We don't want to hide Mont Royal. Good idea. Here, we can and should concentrate on the quality of each and every high-rise, rather than on its height. We can give the phallic gold medal to Toronto without feeling bad about it.
