Council to decide fate of 32-floor hotel

Ville Marie borough council will decide the fate of the future Waldorf=Astoria Hotel & Residence at its monthly council meeting Tuesday night.

Th borough council must decide weather to adopt a proposed change of zoning of a vacant lot on Sherbrooke St. near Guy St., which was purchased by Monit Investments, the company that owns the Waldorf=Astoria brand.

Plans for the 32-storey twin-tower hotel were originally announced last year. They call for 50 guest rooms, 76 residences, nearly 1,400 square metres of ballroom and meeting space, signature restaurants, bars and a spa and fitness centre to be built on the Sherbrooke St. W. site by 2011.

The motion is one of several potentially contentious issues to be debated at the council meeting. The council is also proposing a surtax to the Old Montreal business association.

Ville Marie’s borough council has turned into a political pressure cooker, since Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay became the mayor of the borough after last month’s election. He also named two councillors to the borough council, prompting protests from residents who said the move was undemocratic. Only one of the three elected council seats was won by a member of Tremblay’s political party.

Please, please, please allow this project to come to fruition. It's soo different from everything else we see these days. PLus, it'll add a little more "ooo-la-la" to what's left of the golden square mile!

I couldn't agree more.

Seriously, I'm sick of parking lots....

The question remains: is this the actual design? This is a really old artist rendering. That said, 32 floors is within the zoning allowance here.

Is it really? 32 floors at 3.5 meters per floor = 112 meters...looks like it is! Then there's the "pyramids" on top...in any case, it should be OK.

I'm aware that this design is quite old (dates back to 2003 or 2004), but I still like it!

If this project is rejected, I say we egg city hall. Montreal NEEDS this. That said, even if city council does approve this, I'm still not sure it will go up.

And Malek, I couldn't agree with you more, Maria Gatti has got to be the most ignorant aging tree-hugging socialist that I've ever come across. She thought Margaret Thatcher was the worst PM in British history. Margaret Thatcher!!!

Agreed. Waldorf keeps pushing this project down the road a few years. Hopefully they won't give up on Montreal!
