You are 100% correct in the short term. In the long term, a downtown stadium could have been used for far more events and conceivably be a better deal. Also, maybe not at present, but at the time the stadium was built, they would have still gotten half the costs covered by the provincial government and most probable land and infrastructure support from the city.

You can't compare with the Habs. The Habs have one of the largest arenas in the NHL and are continuously sold out. Given the ethnicity of our city, the fact that we have a soccer specific stadium, an owner with very deep pockets, and the fact that most MLS teems don't have what we have, being in the middle of the field is nothing to be content with.

Our climate does not lend itself to an outdoor stadium. I agree that baseball like soccer should be played outside whenever possible. The only solution is for a retractable roofed stadium that, when opened, does feel like you are out in the open.

That was a big error putting the stadium in the east end. They are not getting anywhere near the crowds nor the business interest they could be getting if they had a downtown location.
  5. Very ice. Too bad the windows and entry to Holt's is not the same height as the Ogilvy side.
  6. You cannot look at it from a country perspective. You need to look at it from an area or city perspective. Th question then is: how does Montreal compare to Boston, Silicon Valley, London, Paris, Tel Aviv, etc...
  7. The multifunctional building could be a bit more audacious. We need to do something with the blank wall above it
  8. We need a world class convention centre the equal of Chicago, Barcelona, Las Vegas, etc... It would do wonders to our city: airport, restaurants, hotels, developing new attractions, high end retail, etccc They need to stop thinking small.

It looks like they are keeping the arched windows bricked - it's unfortunate.
  10. Even though I am not a big fan of this project, I have a big problem with this mindset: 1- There has been a congestion issue ever since I can remember - FIX IT! This is the geographical center of the city - You don't stop a major development because you can't get your act together; 2- I don't think that this project will ever replace downtown. People that go downtown will continue going for many more reasons than the offer proposed by Carbonleo. This project is attractive to shopping center people especially the ones that go to Dix/30, Mirabel, Carrefour Laval and not your downtown crowd; 3- We should suggest, incentivize, etc.. so that the people that put the money and take the risk are motivated to make changes. It needs to be a win/win on both sides; 4-We are sending the worst mixed message to developers. It should not be anything goes, but once a permit is issued it should be carved in stone. FIX your political structure issues and don't use developers as pawns. 5-This area is not the GOLDEN SQUARE MILE, OLD MONTREAL, OLD PORT, or DOWNTOWN. This is an industrial wasteland that needs FIXING.
  11. I totally agree. We need a Phillips Square makeover at the northeast corner of deMaisonneuve/Guy with McKay bordering to the east and a new street/passage bordering to the north.
  12. The video screens are pitiful. You do it and you do it right or you don't do it at all.
  13. Projects of this nature don't come by very seldom. I just hope they do something GRAND like a world class city would. If we do this right the benefits are astronomical!
  14. Fabulous! They just need to do something with the outdoor parking - should be underground and find something special to put above it.
  15. I would like the city to develop a master plan/strategy and a fund in the form of subsidies for special areas of the city, such as Chinatown, Little Italy, Prince Arthur, Red light district, etc, to help the merchants develop the area towards that plan.
  18. Great passageway to Lucien Lallier to connect to the metro station.
  19. Other than our beloved Canadiens, Montreal is an event city: F1, Tennis, Blue Jays weekend, Festivals, etc.... If it were the NFL with 8 home games per year, we would be able to attract massive crowds - 70,000+ no problems. Baseball is way too long. If they don't succeed in creating a carnival atmosphere, like the did in the old days at Jarry Park, I am afraid, unless we have a very competitive team and as much as I hate to admit it, bringing the expos back could be a failure.
  20. Oui pour le gris et brun comme combinaison. Non pour le brun toute seul.
  21. Are they doing anything with the whole side wall facing Bleury? I certainly hope so!

Instead of opposing a major development and end up with nothing, this may be a perfect opportunity to make sure the developers include a larger percentage of their development for affordable housing.
