  1. Wow. Reach for the stars. They can't event envision one new edifice phare for Montreal. Even in the areas zoned 210M (on top of Gare Centrale, south of Place Bonaventure). I love PVM and Le 1000 but a little ambition please.
  2. A city the size of Montreal (a city that will continue to grow!) can't simply have one main shopping street. The way to keep Set Catherine Street vibrant is to ensure that downtown and the the surrounding neighborhoods continue to be built-up; increased density and residential housing in the downtown core is the key. We can't have such restricted zoning where 120+M zones are next to 25M zones, where 50 feet from R-L Blvd, we keep a 3-4 story height limit. The health of retail and entertainment downtown can't and won't depend on people from boroughs and suburbs as many, especially the Projet Montreal folks seem to imply. Ironically, it's Projet Montreal that is making downtown neighborhoods less attractive to suburbanites and people in the distant boroughs with their war on the automobile. Making it harder for people to take their car downtown (fewer lanes of traffic, no parking) won't make them switch to public transit or suddenly become cyclists. They just won't come! They will choose Dix30 and Carrefour Laval etc… Newsflash: the car is not going anywhere. This is a phenomenal project right in the middle of the island and surrounded by well-to-do neighborhoods. Will there need to be traffic mitigation plans? You bet. But all the malls on the island are terrible and are stuck in time-warp. Furthermore, retail is mirroring society: it's either luxury/high-end or cheap/discount. There is very little left in-between. What's left is disappearing. The retail sector is in flux and this project is a response to the trend.
  3. It's a mall for the 21st Century. Build it. It was what I was hoping for. Just wish it was less heavy on office space and had a residential component. With a housing mix, it would be met with much less opposition.
  4. Hotel Espresso is the old Hotel Martinique, I believe. Total tear-down!
  5. From this view, Tour Deloitte makes quite an impact. I've been reading some dissatisfied comments on the board over the last few days but I think it's a beauty - it also looks taller than its 26 stories suggests; the roofline/topper makes a big difference. I also like the view from the south east. Hoping that in the next cycle, the area south of Place Bonaventure and Le 1000 gets all the action.
  6. I actually think the Crystal is quite a nice-looking building. In fact, I like it more than I did when it was first built. Aesthetically, it's aging well. And c'mon, the roofline and the cupola is unique and well-done.
  7. Sixty Hotels' role is as hotel operator. They are not the developers nor the owners.
  8. I agree. Plus it's going to add much-needed density to the area!
  9. Nice! This is so good for this part of downtown. Hope they work on Windsor Station now and not save it for the final phase of the Quad Windsor project; would love to see a lighting scheme devised for that iconic building.
  10. Both by Kohn Pederson Fox.
  11. Many comments about it looking like Calgary or Dallas or Houston… but the reality is, this is the look/style of what is being built today. Funny, no none says 1250 looks like Frankfurt, or 1000 looks like a post-modern building in countless other cities.
  12. The backside is a GREAT billboard space… especially in this emerging luxury-destination pocket of downtown. A giant Louis Vuitton ad or St Laurent (YSL) ad would be better than this facade.
  13. Unfortunately, there is no correlation between the size of city (inhabitants) and the stature of said city's skyline. This building could have very well been 36-40 stories given the pre-leasing of two MAJOR corp tenants. But, it is over 500K SF and is not insignificant on the skyline. I actually love the way it looks from PdC: the contrast with all the greystone (Windsor Station, monuments) is truly exceptional. Don't forget, more buildings are on the way and it won't be so lonely there. Imagine 750 Peel!
  14. I'm going to reserve judgement on these panels but… they are being arranged in strips alternating with glass, which is different. So, we'll see. Ideally, this whole tower would be glass curtain wall. In that respect, I'm looking forward to seeing Icone rise.
  15. It's not a new boulevard, M. Ferrandez. And the connection of the north and south ends of Cavendish is LONG overdue.
  16. Yikes. That is some awful architecture. Not very elegant in its massing. Major fail. Bravo for the height and the mixed-use but this is an ugly complex.
  17. The area straddles the QdS, QI, and Old Montreal... makes sense that a lot of hotels are here. Really ideal.
  18. Yikes. It's just so busy! Too much going on. Stick with one aesthetic! Hopefully whoever is approving this/handing out the permits requests that they refine it more.
  19. This hotel is so well-located and the reno's will no doubt improve the guest experience immensely; those tiny windows were awful and made the guest rooms so dark. This is a very nice improvement for sure!
  20. Trying to make sense of this: looks like Sixty Hotels is coming to Montreal with a 120-key boutique hotel. Sixty is the new brand from the Thompson Hotel founders. I think this is the project.... http://www.sixtyhotels.com/montreal
  21. Gorgeous. That roof detail really elongates that building. It's so nice to see a tower south of windsor Station - that view from across Place du canada isn't so empty anymore.
  22. Canada is not a luxury market. It's the same with airlines... not a premium market - from any city. Canadians who have a lot of wealth are more likely to buy in New York or Miami. Whether it's apartments or retail luxury goods.
  23. Well, a much-need (indoor/covered) train-station has to be included here -- we can barely call the current Gare Lucien L'allier a "station". That's a potential positive. A good opportunity to make the station easily accessible from St Antoine too. Mixed-used is the best solution to get height. Office, condos or rentals, hotel. Take a look a the Shard in London, to name but one example. Here's hoping.
  24. Looks incredible in this shot! It really adds depth to the skyline. And the glass curtain brightens that otherwise dowdy part of downtown.
