The city of Montreal has closed a small downtown street to traffic because it's worried about the structural soundness of an underground garage.

Square Dorchester Street is usually used for parking by tour buses.

The city says tests have been done on the garage and it's waiting for results.

It says the facility remains open because it is safe as long as there is no weight on the roof.

The city says it will know within days whether to reopen the street.

All we need is a small earthquake and this whole city going to go bye-bye.

My bed was shaken a lot by a 4.something earthquake a few months ago. No structure was damaged in the city. Don't be so pessimistic. Lots of people read this forum and phrases like "All we need is a small earthquake and this whole city going to go bye-bye" may be taken seriously by a good percentage of them.

The city of Montreal is naming a stretch of road a pedestrian walkway after closing it to vehicles because it was deemed unsafe for heavy traffic.

The small street Square Dorchester, which runs over a parking garage on Peel St., is closed to vehicles for the summer. Spokesperson Philippe Sabourin said the city discovered during a routine inspection that the concrete was structurally unsound.

But now, he said, pedestrians can use the stretch of road to enjoy the recently restored monuments in the nearby park.

When asked if this was a case of trying to spin a negative situation into a positive one, Sabourin laughed and conceded it was, partly.

“The goal wasn’t to turn the street into a walkway. We hoped that none of this would happen; we hoped to maintain traffic circulation,” he said.

Sabourin said repairs will not start until the fall. The city needs to prepare documents, send out a public call for tenders and award the contract before work can start – all of which causes delays, he said.

But he said in an emergency the process can be sped up.

“Happily and unhappily, we don’t find ourselves in an emergency situation.”

Sabourin said the underground lot will stay open during the summer and once repairs start because it is safe to park there.

“There is no threat of collapse. The structure is totally capable of holding a normal load,” he said, adding: “The structure could be in danger if we put 14 elephants, 36 cars and 16 buses on it.”

Tour buses usually park along Square Dorchester while tourists visit the Centre Infotouriste located there. Since the road closed, the buses have had to park on Metcalfe St.
