  1. I completely agree but even if they announced the return of the expos next year a stadium is probably 5 years away. The natural usage for the dark enclosed space underneath the rail lines would be clubs and bars but given the nimby'ism of the residents in that part of griffintown and their general hatred of the already existing new city gas, I don't think they'll be welcoming more nightlife. In an ideal world the depotium would move and la caisse would open up the nazareth side and allow small bars/café/clubs to occupy that space similar to what Vienna has with the Gürtel ring road. Where a series of small establishments are located directly underneath the U-Bahn line. It would make available space that only local boutique businesses could operate given the size and add some desperately needed character to Griffintown. I wish vienna had google streetview to show how great it is. https://www.wien.info/en/lifestyle-scene/nightlife/nightlife-under-subway Apologies for the explosion of images.
  2. I don't think that the multiple traffic lanes surrounding the linear park and associated traffic would be the main reason for the failure of this public place, take avenue du Parc for example, similar in many ways minus the linear park in the middle yet people cross it and walk alongside it with no problem. For a linear park of this type to be successful as a public space, it either needs to be a destination in itself or a natural place people transit through. I don't know if the work by Jaume Plensa will be impressive enough on its own to draw people to it similar to the bean in Chicago. Besides that work of art, nothing about this space makes it a destination. It certainly isn't a natural transit corridor for anyone that's not in a car. If you approach it from the north you end up at the entrance of the Bonaventure expressway with nowhere to go besides where you came form. Only cars will be approaching it from the south and they can't exactly enjoy the park. East-West movements would seem to be limited to people living in Griffintown and that work or are going out in Old Montreal/La cité du multimédia. Once you crossover into griffintown from the east you're immediately confronted with a wall of condo buildings along l'inspecteur and ann. Then you're on shannon again nothing but entrances to Condo buildings, you reach Peel and a series of uninteresting chain store. A serious amount of development will be required along/under the rail lines and even at the bassin peel to make this a successful public space.
  4. Clearly, they didn't pay any attention to the details or user experience. One of the most natural things a tourist or visitor to this giant wheel will want to do is take pictures. The most natural backdrops would be the new illuminated bridge and towards the city. With that in mind, why would you have the only side that has a completely seamless pane of glass point towards the opposition direction? (the water) which is of little or no photographic value while the door and pillars are directly in the way of any view towards the city. Why have seats? It forces people to sit down instead of encouraging them to explore multiple views. If you want to take pictures of the new illiminated bridge you'll have to hope you have a half empty cabin to yourself or nicely ask people to duck out of your way while also severely limiting how you can frame the picture. Why the branding stickers on the outside glass? Yet an other obstacle to taking any decent pictures even if there weren't any seats. Their choice of cabin is so terrible and screams very cheap execution.
  6. Facebook already has a decent sized team in Toronto in the MaRS discovery district, and from what I've read they got a very very favourable leasing term on their office space. I don't see why they would open a satellite office in Montréal unless their is some talent here that they haven't been able to attract to Toronto.
  12. It's impact on parallel lines will largely depend on what the fare structure and it's integration with the STM's will be like. But I would expect changes in transit patterns. If for example you take the 121 bus route to get onto the orange line at Cote-Vertu or Sauvé and your final destination is UdeM or Downtown, it could now be faster for you stay on the bus for 10 more minutes until you get to Montpellier and take the REM. I'd also expect reduced demand for bus lines like the 129 and maybe even the 165. I would hope that the STM would consider modifying their bus routes instead of their frequency. I know it's already the case in the west-island hopefully they'll see the opportunity to improve their coverage.
  15. I'd say that the renderings aren't very appealing, if you want to see a smaller version of what this could potentially look like, you just have to visit the MIT campus in Boston to get an idea. The main difference being that the one in montreal won't be filled in at it's base (presumably so that people can walk through it?) which takes away from the shape of the piece. Different types of lighting should have a very dramatic effect on it. https://www.google.ca/search?q=mit+statue&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiu95fsoeDNAhVJFh4KHb7OAS4Q_AUICCgB&biw=1276&bih=783#tbm=isch&q=the+alchemist+mit
  16. The problem with that location is that it doesn't really allow for a nice store front. Then again if the Nike store is nice enough (We can only hope for something as nice as in narajuku tokyo) Then it would attract people regardless.
  17. we already have a Adidas store. A Nike Town and the 1st Uniqlo in Canada would be amazing. But there really aren't any free spaces along st-catherine unless we started kicking out the lower end "independent" shops.
  18. Do we know if they plan on replanting trees like they had promised? http://www.cyberpresse.ca/actualites/regional/montreal/200904/10/01-845677-quartier-des-spectacles-67-arbres-coupes.php and what happened to the competition for a public art work ?
  19. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised at all, this is the city of Montreal after all. With the festivals coming up soon I don't think they'll have time. When I passed by last week they were putting asphalt around the sewer drains in front of L'Astral.

Honestly, it's only going to get worst. Instead of trying to control the action of a few in a massive crowd why not move them towards a more open area where they can celebrate? If sainte-catherine street wasn't partially closed, I'd proposed to have fans parade down sainte-catherine to the Place des Festivals (Which we know can hold several thousand people easily). You'll be keeping the trouble makers (hiding amongst the fans) away or at least taking away most of their cover, bring these people to an area that I think be much easier to for the police to control. I'm thinking we could have it go along this route: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Rue+de+la+Montagne&daddr=Rue+de+la+Montagne+to:Rue+Jeanne+Mance&hl=en&geocode=FXs4tgIdP2Gd-w%3BFQE9tgId1Fed-w%3BFfZitgId5nad-w&mra=cc&via=1&dirflg=w&sll=45.495774,-73.572264&sspn=0.007851,0.01929&ie=UTF8&ll=45.503129,-73.561492&spn=0.015701,0.038581&z=15 Ironically it's almost exactly 1 mile, maybe we can name it the Bleu Blanc Rouge Mile.
