  1. I am likely the person on this board with the most experience in the wastewater field. I can tell you that dumping untreated wastewater is very common. No one wants to it, but in reality it occasionally has to be done for a multitude of reasons. A couple of days ago the city of Boisbriand did not treat their wastewater for a full day because workers were doing repair work on the UV disinfection system. All the appropriate levels of government were informed of this spill...no one is freaking out. I work in the environmental field, so I for sure care about our environment. However, I also understand that there sometimes is only so much that can be done. One week of 8 billion liters of wastewater in the Saint Lawrence truly is a drop in a bucket. If this was going on for months and months it would be terrible, but one week, let's please move on. The people who are complaining are sadly just uninformed and ignorant.
  2. I think this is one of the most stylish buildings going up right now. Maybe the most. I love the retro look.
  3. Acpnc, I understand your point of view. However, isn't it the responsability of journalists to report on things that are out of the normal? Most of the times people don't get shot and killed, so when someone does they report on it. Most of the times an inspector does his job properly, but when he doesn't it gets reported. Même chose, non? Peut-etre tu n'aime pas trop The Gazette. Personnellement, je ne lis pas les journaux, j'ai des meilleur choses à faire dans ma vie que de lire du bitchage. But isn't that what newspapers are? Il n'y a presque rien de positif dans un journal.
  4. I personally wouldn't get rid of the elevated 40 until it is no longer economically feasible to maintain it. However, when that time comes I would do the following: 1. From about Lacordaire (ideally the 25) to Decarie I would dig a tunnel beneath the 40. This will take a long time, but it doesn't matter as long as the cars can still drive on the existing highway. This tunnel will be for "thru traffic". If you are not planning on stopping anywhere between Lacordaire and Decarie then this tunnel is a one-way ticket through the city. 2. Once that is built you start to destroy the 40 which is above ground and replace it with an urban boulevard for local traffic. To me this is a perfect solution for all needs. Would it cost a lot of money? I am sure it will. However, if built properly it could last a very long time and really solve traffic issues, as well as integrate the neighbourhoods north and south of the 40. But as I said, I would only do this when the elevated part of the 40 is in really bad shape and needs replacing.
  5. Super cool find! I've always been curious to the reference of Northeatern Lunch in Cohen literature.
  6. I am all for extending the metro, however there is one thing that has always been in the back of my mind about the extension of the blue line towards the east. The one thing that I find doesn't make total sense for a blue line extension east is that people living in Saint Leonard already take the metro downtown to work and school. I know, I grew up there. We just got on the bus at Lacordaire, Langelier or Viau and took the 15 to 20 minute ride all the way to the green line metros. How does an extended blue line help these people? They still have to get on a bus to get to the the new blue line station. Then instead of having a straight shot downtown on the green, they are now on the blue and must transfer twice. Honestly, if I was still living in Saint Leonard I am fairly sure I would opt to not take the bus to the new blue station, but simply stay on the bus to the green. One less transfer to make, and honestly, probably a faster route.
  7. You knew at some point you were going to start hearing some assholes say an English name like Royal Mount shouldn't be used. Got to love culturally accepted racism. Here is a small snippet of what you see out there. Also notice that these are the posts that get the most "likes". I know this is irrelevant to a building project, but I thought I'd share some racism.
  8. Marché Central is terrible, so i don't think anyone would be sad to see it go away. Marché Central belongs in the suburbs, at least this project seems urban to me.
  9. Honestly, this is way better than I am sure any one of us here was expecting. My expectations were quite low, so I will admit that I am fairly surprised that the design of this doesn't seem terrible (like Marché Central).
  10. If money were not an object, I think the best solution would be the following Step 1. Dig a tunnel beneath the current metropolitaine, from at least l'acadie to Pie IX. Step 2: Divert traffic to new tunnel. Destroy the elevated section of the metropolitaine. Step 3: Build an urban boulevard between l'acadie and Pie IX. Step 4: Use both the urban boulevard and the tunnel together. Thru-traffic stays in the tunnel, while anyone who wants to exit between l'acadie and pie IX takes the urban boulevard. I think a solution of this sort will help traffic issues and will rectify the neighbourhood splitting caused in the wake of the creation of the elevated metropolitaine.
  11. This is one of my favourite buildings. It sort of has a mid-century design.
  12. Isn't there a clause in the contract that stipulates that there are fines if the product is delayed? I hope they have the balls to tell Bomardier that if the trains come late then they will be fined for delays. Simple as that. However, knowing the way our government works we won't have the balls to do that.
  13. Mount Royal is a pluton, not a volcano. Same can be said for Saint Bruno, Saint Hilaire, etc...
  14. To be clear, they did not buy Dessau, they bought Dessau Engineering and subsidiaries Gestrans, Plania and Azimuth. Dessau still exists....for now. Dessau now consists of their offices in Central America, Algeria, and its 3 remaining subsidiaries: Verreault, Simo and Sogep.
  15. Ok, the article I read about this didn't mention the fact that the signs won't change. If this is true then I can live with it. Thank you for informing me.
  16. Because this change will cost a few million dollars of tax payer money. This is at the bottom of the priority list. In fact, it is not even ON the list.
  17. I just checked my calender to make sure today wasn't April Fool's. This is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. What a waste of money and time.
  18. Joel, why would you post Toronto pics in this thread? Makes no sense. That being said, I was in Toronto this weekend as well and hated every second of their downtown. It's awful.
  19. Wow, are you saying Habitat 67 is not a nice looking building? That's insane. I have never heard that before. It's a masterpiece!
  20. If Montreal had no more room to grow and the only way for devloppers to make money would be to go higher than the Mmountain then I guess i would have to say Ok. However, like others have said, no one has even come close in recent times to proposing anything as high as the mountain limit, so the entire debate is ridiculous. This message board has many people who get a boner for tall buildings. That is fine. However, don't let your boner do all your thinking instead of your brain. I guarantee you 99% of the people in this city don't give a shit about have the tallest buildings. In fact, every person I have ever told about the height restriction in Montreal thought it was a good idea.
  21. A long time is the key to that sentence. I'm all for public transport investment, but as of right now we are a long ways away from where I'd like to see it to make me give up my car. My friends who live downtown and in the plateau think it is FAR coming to see me at Cremazie metro (plus a 12 minute walk). So if that is the culture we live in we are doomed.
  22. I wish I didn't have to use my car so much, but unfortunately we all can't live and work downtown, or in the plateau. I live in Montreal, close to a metro (cremazie) and I usually take it when going downtown or the plateau. Owning a car is expensive, but if I didn't have my car (and my indoor parking spot) I wouldn't have a job! Honestly, it's pretty awful not having a car. Most of my friends live downtown or in the plateau and do not own a car. It's amazing how these people live in bubbles and don't go outside of them because they can't get there (or it takes too long).
I admit that running a simulation in a lab is not a perfect representation of reality. However, as time goes by and more data gets collected the models become more and more accurate. Everything in your life that you appreciate and take for granted was developed by the scientific method. Why do you doubt it in this case?
