A fire has destroyed a well-known sugar shack in Mont St. Grégoire, located about 60 kilometres southeast of Montreal in the Montérégie.

The Sous Bois sugar shack, at 164 Sous Bois Rd., was completely destroyed by the fire about midnight in the night of Sunday to Monday, Sûreté du Québec Sgt. Martine Isabelle said.

There were no reported injuries. TV coverage of the fire showed the buildings housing the kitchen, reception areas and offices completely ablaze. The facility reportedly could serve 750 people and the material damages were estimated to be in the millions of dollars. The sugar shack was known for its DJ music seven days a week, and hikes in pedestrian paths at nearby Mont St. Grégoire that worked up an appetite.

According to the Sous Bois website, the Sous Bois sugar shack dated back to 1973 when brothers Luc and Roch Gladu bought a run-down former sugar shack on a plot of land measuring one acre and a half wide by twenty acres long.

The Sous bois sugar shack also made the news in March 2007, when some media reports said a group of 260 Muslims imposed their will on non-Muslins at the sugar shack. However, it later came out that the facility’s owners had agreed to make baked beans without pork for the 260 Muslims in the group, in order to meet their dietary restrictions. And it was the sugar shack’s owner who asked the party next door to turn off its music for a few minutes while some of the Muslims prayed.

The SQ said it is waiting for firefighters to indicate whether or not the fire was accidental. If it wasn't an accident, the SQ will investigate the cause, Isabelle said.
