La chaîne hôtelière Jaro prend pied dans le Vieux-Montréal, arrêtant son choix sur un ancien stationnement situé à l'angle des rues Notre-Dame et St-François Xavier.

 

 

C'est du moins ce que rapporte The Gazette dans son édition de vendredi.

 

La compagnie de Sainte-Foy, fondée par Jacques Robitaille, a confirmé au quotidien son intention de bâtir un hôtel de 300 chambres sur 10 étages.

 

Toutefois, une demande de permis de développement n'aurait pas encore été faite auprès de la ville de Montréal alors que le terrain devait devenir le site d'un édifice à condos.

 

À l'heure actuelle, Jaro compte six hôtels pour plus de 1000 chambres dans la région de Québec et elle planifierait d'ouvrir un autre établissement dans le Vieux-Québec.

 

Récemment, un autre acteur a annoncé son intention de s'installer dans le Vieux-Montréal en transformant une ancienne succursale de la Banque Royale, sur la rue St-Jacques, en un hôtel de 130 chambres.

Yet another new luxury hotel will be setting up in Old Montreal.

Les Hôtels Jaro, a family-owned company operating out of suburban Quebec City, purchased a former parking-garage lot at the corner of Notre Dame and St. François Xavier Sts. for its first venture away from the provincial capital.

"We bought the land there this summer and are starting plans for a 300-room, 10-storey hotel," Jaro general-manager Marlène Robitaille confirmed yesterday from the head office in Ste. Foy.

Robitaille, who runs the company with two sisters and their developer-father Jacques Robitaille (for which Jaro is named), refused to discuss further details about the Montreal project.

Jacques-Alain Lavallée, spokesman for the Ville Marie borough responsible for Old Montreal, told The Gazette that no request for a development permit has been made by Jaro for that property, most recently pegged to become the site of Le Saint François condominium building.

Jaro is a full-service luxury boutique chain with six hotels in and around Quebec City that comprise more than 1,000 rooms.

Those establishments, which are rated three and four stars, include: the Sir Wilfrid Laurier Auberge, Hôtel Québec Inn,

Hôtel Plaza Québec, Hôtel Québec, Hôtel Palace Royal and Hôtel Lindbergh.

A seventh, as-yet unnamed hotel is planned for Laurier Blvd. in Vieux Québec.

The news comes on the heels that investors from France will spend about $40 million to turn the former Royal Bank branch at 221 St. Jacques St. in Old Montreal into a 130-room hotel.

That's in addition to the neighbouring old Gazette building, which being converted into a high-end 400-room Westin and 200-room Embassy Suites just south of that project and next to the Palais des congrès.

Bonne nouvelle, si ça se concrétise. Ce stationnement/terrain vague est une des pires plaies du Vieux-Montréal. Les condos Saint-François avaient un mauvais design. Espérons que cet hotel sera plus attrayant. Mais ça commence à faire beaucoup d'hôtels dans le Vieux. Saturation en vue?

Toutefois ça me fait un peu peur par ce que leur hotel à Québec ne sont pas des canons de beauté architecturale... J'espère que les moyens et le design seront réunis...

It is a pretty good location, I think right across the street on the west side of the building there is another hotel.

There is a huge parking lot in front of McGill Ouest, I heard they want to try and turn it into a park.

 

Old Montreal is in need of some green space. True they are making a small park on the side of the Canada Custom building on McGill, they have been doing that for a while now though.
