Turkey vultures inhabit rural and urban areas and can be spotted soaring above Montreal, Quebec. They are carrion eaters that help dispose of dead animals, keeping the environment clean of diseased and rotting flesh. Turkey vultures are protected by federal law under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.

Turkey vultures are regularly seen soaring over the heart of downtown Montreal and resting on the ledges of its highest office towers, especially those that taper from bottom to top with many ledges (like the one seen in this photo), as opposed to straight up and down, box-style rectangular towers. During the summer months it is possible to see 3-8 birds soaring together over the city. They keep the environment clean of diseased or rotting flesh and find much of their prey, (which is made up of 100% carrion), a short flight from the city along the shores of the St. Lawrence River (for dead fish) and in the farming regions surrounding the city, for carrion. They may also scavenge carrion in the vicinity of Mount Royal Park. Vultures are protected by federal law under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.

Des dindons sauvages!!!! Il y en a en Montérégie mais j'étais loin de m'imaginer qu'on en a en ville! Je vais regarder plus souvent dans le ciel maintenant.

C'est vraiment impressionnant! À cause de leur grandeur, ils sont facile à remarquer dans le ciel, même s'ils volent plus haut des édifices..

Quelles sont les villes les plus peuplées dans le monde (humains + animaux sauf rats)? Faudrait-il ajuster les calculs pour tenir compte de la taille respective de chacun? Les cas d'obésité viendraient-ils fausser les calculs? De quelle utilité seraient les résultats? Comment la notion de développement durable peut-elle s'insérer dans le tableau?

 

Et finalement, dans quelle discipline académique (présente ou future) de telles questions seraient-elles pertinentes?
