  1. The difference between a “shin” station at A40 and those in Japan is that the Shinkansen stations in Japan usually handle more than one line to continue on past the cities they serve. So in theory, the A40 station could eventually be redeveloped to handle the TGF and a flyover could be built to continue the TGF on new tracks along the current Mascouche line route through the CSL yards, continuing on towards Ontario along the A20 right of way without ever going around the mountain to Central Station. This is how it’s done in many cities around the world. The big difference is those cities typically do this for 300 km/h trains.

Le mot japonais “shin” se traduit à “nouveau.” ”Shinkansen” is “new main line” and “shinbun” is “new(s)|paper.” As Japanese cities kept expanding into megalopolises, older stations couldn’t handle increased traffic, while building the new bullet trains (Shinkansen) into the dense city centres would be impossibly expensive and difficult, so “new,” larger stations were built nearby, usually just outside the centres. This why you’ll see stations like “Shin-Yokohama” and “Shin-Ōsaka.”

  7. This is just such a dumb debate. There were six AMT trains leaving Deux-Montagnes every weekday morning that could get a rider downtown before 9 AM. Six. So even if the damn trains held 2000 passengers each, of which maybe 1200 would be sitting, that’s still just 12,000 passengers able to get downtown between the first departure at 5:50 AM and 9 AM. It’s like the height of pompous privilege that the main beef of Les Chiâleux de Deux-Montagnes (or whatever the group is called) is the lack of a seat all the way to Centrale. There will be 128 fresh seats at DM every five minutes during rush hours, and you won’t need to rush to catch one of those six trains to make it to work on time.

  13. I could not agree more. In my personal, humble opinion it rivals Mies’ Seagram Building and Lake Shore Drive towers, only less well-known because of scale.

The security guard directing traffic off of the service road onto Fairview Avenue was nice enough to let me sneak behind the barricade for less than two minutes so I was able to take a few quick clichés of the Fairview station that is progressing nicely. She told me if I come back after 4 o’clock, there won’t be anybody there, but I won’t be able to come back after 4 o’clock so if anybody wants to come out and scope the area, now we know. 😄 Most of the big HVAC stuff was installed a couple of weeks ago, and now it seems the escalators are being installed! Also some walls have started going up, so I think we will start to see the exterior cladding of the station being installed after the construction holiday. Sorry I didn’t have a chance to look at these pictures indoors, so they are unretouched.

The MPM-10 is advertised as having a capacity of 1555, and it is both narrower and has shorter cars than the version of Metropolis chosen for REM (and has less-space-efficient seating and a cab at each end). The calculation is based on 4 pax/m². The six-car, fully-open-gangway Metropolis of the Sydney Metro — that is otherwise identical to REM — has a capacity of 1100 per train, or about 183 per car. Discount the 2m² lost with the missing gangway on REM and that works out to… 724 passengers. BUT all this is MOOT. It is evolving from a rush-hour, one-way, commuter-biased train service into a two-way, all-day, show-up-and-go metro system; it simply won’t be as crammed as the AMT trains got because of their limited rush-hour frequencies and delays, and terrible off-peak service, and that pressing need among users to “make that train” or be stuck, or late for work, or whatever.
