A Montreal developer is hoping to bring a bit of Italy to the Lachine Canal.

 

Robert Stopponi is trying to push forward his plans for a six million dollar, three storey entertainment complex along the Lachine Canal on Mill Street close to the Old Port.

 

He says the il Ponticello complex would include gondolas gliding on the canal, a restaurant, a bistro, and a roof top belvedere that would turn into a skating rink in the winter. Entertainment would include 40's style music and a Moulin Rouge-type show.

 

Stopponi says at least ten gondolas would be imported from Italy complete with singing gondoliers, at a cost of $25,000 per watercraft.

 

Now all he needs is the rest of the financing; he says a third of the project was built before the funding dried up, after the Quebec government pulled its promised funding when Stopponi didn't get the city permits in time.

 

He says he now has those permits and is lobbying private investors to come up with the rest of the $2.5-million dollars he needs to complete the project.

 

He says he's confident he'll find the money, and doesn't believe these tough economic times will hinder him.

 

"Absolutely not. Everybody wants to go out. Montreal is a very wild, entertaining city, The economy has nothing to do with this," Stopponi tells CJAD News.

 

Stopponi says if he gets the financing, the complex could be up and running by next summer.

Mais pour le bâtiment, je suis content de voir ça, par contre, ça enlève du terrain pour les projet d'hôtels et la tonne d'autre projet proposé sur se site.

 

Dommage que le bâtiment ne se marie pas avec le reste de l'aménagement du VP.

C'est vrai qu'à première vue ça peut paraitre ''kétaine" surtout en mettant l'emphase sur les gondoles. Par contre j'aime bien l'audace du propriétaire qui nous présente quelque chose d'original et qui pourra etre le signal de la transformation du secteur du Silo no.5.

 

Quelque chose de kitch peut parfois devenir une attraction très intéressante. Une batiment frappant et quelque peu unique, une expérience différente, un lieu relativement inusité et un concept ultra-tourtistique.......et bien, c'est assez audacieux !

 

Je vois déjà mon père et mon oncle faire leur réservation afin d'impressionner leur femme. Une promenade dan le vieux et une soirée dans ce resto avant de terminer au casino.....

Un premier projet à la porte du Vieux-Port qui viendra animer ce coin totalement désolant et qui je l'espère aura un effet d'entrainement pour tout le secteur. Il est voisin du Silo no5 dont on attend impatiemment les développements.

 

Points positifs: ouvre la voie à d'autres services qui pourraient se greffer à cette rive du canal. Favorisera plus d'animation en développant des activités sur le canal lui-même. Design acceptable d'autant plus qu'il est seul dans son coin et j'aime bien la petite place qui se greffe à l'ensemble.

 

Moins positifs: je comprend l'esprit italien dont s'inspire le promoteur mais l'idée des gondoles me laisse perplexe. Cependant il faut encourager l'usage du canal et une formule plus "couleur locale", comme dit uquam+, serait à inventer.

 

Je suis aussi d'accord avec Steve 36, ce projet pourrait attirer une clientèle plus ciblée et pourquoi pas justement l'âge d'or qui pourrait s'approprier un espace bien à eux avec danse sur la petite place adjacente et autres activités?

 

Certains secteurs du canal ont grand besoin de petits projets de ce genre. Ceci afin de soutenir l'animation urbaine et profiter de l'attrait naturel de l'eau pour toutes sortes d'activités génératrices d'emplois. Les rives du canal se prêtent bien justement à la promenade et une fois aménagées avec goût, pourraient attirer de nombreux touristes jusqu'à Griffintown et même le Marché Atwater.

At least it wont stink as much as Venice. Its for sure one of the more interesting projects in the city to say the least.

If they can personalize the gondola experience to be uniquely Montréalaise both in the design of the gondolas (whether more canoe-like or otherwise) and in the design of the gondolieres' uniform, I think we have a winning idea on our hands (so long as it is feasible).

Pourquoi pas ? Si le bâtiment est bien construit, ce pourrait être un ajout intéressant sans tomber dans du Walt-Disney plastique.
