Je pense pas qu'on puisse mesurer la popularité d'un sport en fonction de son nombre d'inscrits. Il faut prendre en compte plusieurs choses.

D'abord, le soccer est un sport très accessible, autant d'un point de vue financier que physique. Jouer au soccer, ne revient pas cher. A part les chaussures à crampons qui peuvent couter pas mal, le reste est assez bon marché, alors qu'une tenue complète de hockey...

Aussi, physiquement, le soccer présente moins de risques que le hockey, c'est moins dangereux, moins rugueux. Plus de personnes sont capables d'y jouer.

 

Un autre exemple, en France:

Tennis: 1 054 513 inscrits (2ème sport le plus pratiqué en France, le soccer est 1er)

Basketball: 447 942 inscrits (5ème)

Handball: 337 971 inscrits (8ème)

Rugby: 235 675 inscrits (13ème)

 

Malgré le fait que le rugby soit 13ème, c'est le 2ème sport le plus regardé en France derrière le soccer. Le match France-Nouvelle-Zélande en 2007 lors du quart de finale de la coupe du monde, a rassemblé 16 millions de téléspectateurs, avec un pic à 18 millions, soit pratiquement 1 français sur 3 (meilleure audience de l'année 2007).

A titre de comparaison, un match de Roland-Garros, avec un français qui joue en quart de finale, rassemble au grand maximum un peu plus de 7 millions de téléspectateurs.

Quand aux autres sports (Handball et Basketball), en coupe du monde, je crois qu'à eux deux, ils ne dépassent même pas le million de téléspectateurs (les matchs de championnats national ne sont même pas diffusés à la tv, j'en ai jamais vu en tout cas).

La encore, comme au Hockey, c'est peut-être parce que pas tout le monde n'est capable de jouer au rugby à un bon niveau, c'est un sport très physique.

 

Comme quoi, le nombre de licenciés ne veut pas dire grand chose.

Congratulations to the Swiss!

 

They played hard and beat Portugal 2-0. Even though they're out of the tournament, they go home happy with a feel-good win. Good for them!

 

I'm not too sad about losing, since Portugal's top 8 players, including #1 in the world Cristiano Ronaldo, didn't play today to give the substitutes some practice + not risk any injuries.

GROUP C PERMUTATIONS

 

The Netherlands have won Group C and will play the Group D runners-up in the quarter-finals.

 

Romania will qualify for the quarter-finals if they beat the Netherlands, eliminating France and Italy.

 

If Romania fail to beat the Netherlands, the winner of France v Italy will go through.

 

If France and Italy draw, a point against the Netherlands would be enough to send Romania through. France must win to have any chance of qualifying.

 

If France and Italy share a score draw (1-1, 2-2, 3-3 etc), Italy will go through if Romania lose (by any score). In this scenario, Italy, Romania and France will be level on two points each but Italy would have scored more goals in games between the 3 teams.

 

Romania will finish bottom of the group if they lose and France and Italy draw 2-2, 3-3 or 4-4. France will finish bottom if they draw 1-1 unless Romania lose 3-0 or by a four-goal margin.

 

If France and Italy draw 0-0, Romania can lose by one goal, two goals or by a three-goal margin other than 3-0 but still qualify. In this scenario, Italy and Romania would have identical head-to-head records, but Romania would have better goal difference in ALL group matches or, in the case of the three-goal defeats, goals scored. France would finish bottom, having scored fewer goals head-to-head v Italy and Romania.

 

If Romania lose 3-0 to the Dutch, Italy would qualify with a 0-0 draw against France because of their superior coefficient points. France would finish bottom as they would have scored fewer goals head-to-head v Italy and Romania.

 

If Romania lose by four goals or more and the other game ends 0-0, Italy would proceed with a better overall goal difference than Romania. France would finish bottom as they would have scored fewer goals head-to-head v Italy and Romania.

 

If France and Italy draw AND Romania avoid defeat, then Romania go through.

Good sounding win for the Italians, we now play Spain which will be a difficult test considering we have lost Gattuso and Pirlo due to their second yellow cards against France.

Tomorrow, Portugal vs Germany...

 

Germany are without their coach for having argued / badmouthed? with officials.

 

Loew was ordered to watch the second half of Germany's win over Austria on Tuesday from the stands after arguing with the fourth official just before halftime. Austrian counterpart Josef Hickersberger was similarly banished from the touchline.

 

I doubt this will change much though. Germany will be a fierce competitor one way or another!

 

Go Portugal! Italy, Netherlands and Spain have already won a Euro championship.. Portugal has not. This year it's their turn!
