La Biosphère (Dome Géodésique de Fuller)

Sinon, plus moderne, de l'ETFE (plastique avec coussin d'air entre les couches), mais probablement aussi dispendieux mais beaucoup plus léger et on perdrait le look d'origine et probablement l'effet de transparence. 

De plus, pour mettre la boule fermée au norme, j'imagine même pas comment on giclerait le lieu, et qu'on chaufferait et climatiserait l'endroit, car en refermant le boule, on devrait la ventiler de façon mécanique. 

Autre grosse interrogation, est-ce que la structure actuelle a été légèrement affaiblie par l'incendie ? Elle est encore en bonne état, mais clairement que le feu a eu avoir un impact sur elle.

It was welded together.

SGH participated in conceptualizing, designing, and supporting construction phases of the geodesic dome.  Highlights of our design include the following:

Applied several innovative computer techniques to analyze the double-layer, space-frame dome and develop the dome geometry, which was the largest spherical application of geodesic geometry at the time

Selected hollow tubular steel members of varying wall thickness and used thinner walled-sections for the upper portion of the dome, where the stresses are lower, to make efficient use of materials without changing the exterior appearance of the individual members

Developed, designed, and tested a welded, cast steel hub for the individual dome joints to help achieve the desired lacy aesthetic for the frame

Calculated the dome geometry for hub fabrication

Analyzed patterns of triangular sun shades in the dome to be adjusted at 20 min. intervals to keep interior displays under continuous shade as the direction of the sun rays changed

Developed the design and construction sequence to eliminate the need for external scaffolding by capitalizing on the self-supporting nature of the double-layer, geodesic geometry

For the interior exhibits, SGH designed elevated structures conceived by Cambridge Seven Associates.  The structures, including interconnected concourses, platforms, and balconies, were framed in structural steel with slender tubular columns.

The fire 45 years ago had no effect on the structure. Zero. It was fully repainted 25 years ago. They could put a light translucid plastic coat but they will never do it. No money and fire hazard.

It was my understanding that Bucky Fuller had originally designed the segments to be bolted together, but for speed and cost savings SGH decided to weld them, and the fire was ignited during rework on one of the welds.

Fire caught on during wielding work to close back the openings of the minirail. The blue minirail was dismanteled the year before (1975) when they transformed Ile Notre-Dame for the Olympics.

Yeah. Never mind that no clear plastics at the time were flame-resistant, had the segments been bolted together, the welder’s torch wouldn’t have come into play.

The domes also have several drawbacks; for example, they are not suitable for highly urbanized environments and are practically impossible to extend. Also, given the dynamics of indoor air circulation, they require major fire prevention installations and excellent ventilation systems. Ambient noise can also generate problems.

En passant, l'enveloppe extérieure était en acrylique.
