My wife and I went today. The mall itself has nothing luxurious about it; cheap flooring material, glass canopy not even trying to be anything than flat glass panes sitting on h-beams. Even the downtown malls have a more upscale feel to them (except for the stores obviously). Hopefully the remaining retail, outdoor piazza, offices, and residential portions are going to enhance the experience. If there's going to be 5,000 housing units, it would certainly make sense to have a huge grocery store somewhere in there as well. Connectivity to the Metro is great but wouldn't it have been possible to have it covered all the way? I guess Montreal has yet to sort-out how to handle partnerships with transit authorities to go the last mile, as it is done in Asia (my experience being Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul, and Bangkok, where there's covered transit-mall connection, and they do not have Canadian winters!). Below; we were surprised that there wasn't much done with that open space. I caught myself dreaming that one day, Montreal would get something similar to Changi's Jewel ( All-in-all, once and if RoyalMount truly becomes an integrated city-in-a-city, it is going to be a step forward for Montreal in terms of providing an alternative to the suburbs that is drastically different than what is currently available. It's just that there were such superlatives being used to promote the project that anyone with some experience with luxury malls is bound to be a bit disappointed.- 1
