Biometric scanning is a game-changer for travel. It took me four seconds to get through US immigration using the Global Entry “kiosk” at LAX last month coming back from Sydney. Walk up, it scans your face, and before you can put your glasses or hat back on, the CBP officer nearby calls your name and says, “Good to go.” Facial recognition for boarding flights isn’t quite that fast yet, but it has improved a lot since the first tests a couple of years ago. Because of the need to centre one's face in the image on these smaller, portable systems, right now it takes about as long as scanning the barcode on a boarding pass; but because there’s no fumbling around for the boarding pass or opening it up in a digital wallet, and no need to open one’s passport to the picture page for verification by an airline agent anymore, it’s already quicker than the old system.

It’s a pretty simple solution: if you don’t like how it looks, don’t look at it. Nobody’s forcing you.
